What a pleasure it was to have the opportunity to speak to Trust leaders at the @CSTvoice School Improvement Conference today. Here's a few of the key messages from my talk today when considering Trust-wide approaches to PD...
Obviously, much more to unpack and unpick here, but hopefully a helpful starting point for anybody in the midst of such important work. The new Conceptual Model of Trust-led School Improvement will be an invaluable tool to further this thinking. Great job, @steverollett + Team!
And ensure that systems and processes reflect an ambition for all staff to achieve excellence and fluency within and beyond their roles...
Having a clear understanding of the values, skills, experiences and professional behaviours needed in role is key in bridging existing gaps. So, think about...
In all of this work, it's imperative that there is alignment between school improvement activities and people development. School improvement is the vehicle for people development (and visa versa) and this encourages a model where change can be longer-lasting and sustainable.
The narrative needs to shift from an 'input' model of PD to an 'impact model', i.e. what is it we are trying to improve? What is the difference we're aiming to achieve? This paper by @ViviennePorritt demonstrates the difference that swapping lenses can make to your organisation.
And then there's the issue of measurement. @ProfCoe 's 'poor proxies for learning' could easily be adapted as poor proxies for staff development... how do we meaningfully ascertain the impact of our work, here?
We also need to be conscious of the danger of 'fake work' in this space, too... ', how do we ensure that all PD activity doesn't fall into the 'fake work' trap- when operating at scale, this is especially challenging. How much of this work will be impactful? Sustained?
We must "lean into the fullness of the complexity of the system" to coin a phrase, @nmgilbride, and understand the implications and unintended consequences of our well-intentioned actions in planning and delivering PD. i.e. resist the temptation to do lots of 'stuff'...
