PEARL's Principle Investigator (Prof. Strong @UofT) testified at the Canadian HoCs' Science Committee on May 28, 2024 about the value of the long term Arctic atmosphere measurements and ongoing funding challenges. Here are clips: savepearlcampaign.wordpress.com/2024/06/10/pea… #CdnSci #Arctic
A few weeks ago, we sent a questionnaire to the major parties asking where they stand on science. We now have responses to help inform your vote ! Check it out: bit.ly/2ptPZBA Head to votescience.ca to get science on the agenda ahead of #elxn43 & #VoteScience!
Shaun Lovejoy (@LovejoyShaun), a Prof. at McGill, writes: "...ever since last year’s shutdown of the Climate Change and Atmospheric Research (CCAR) program, Canada has had a gaping climate science hole." montrealgazette.com/opinion/opinio… #VoteScience #cdnsci #elxn43
Are you hoping for an opportunity to hear from #VoteScience organizers and ask some questions about engaging ahead of #elxn43? Register for our upcoming webinar: bit.ly/2kyHlQn
Interesting ... the @CanadianGreens platform states explicitly that they would re-fund the Canadian Climate and Atmospheric Research (CCAR) program and explicitly states funding PEARL. Maybe we could get all parties to steal this plank?!
The election is top of mind for many Canadians. But is science? Science doesn't usually get a lot of attention during elections and we think that needs to change. Check out the #VoteScience campaign to find out how you can get involved. #CdnSci #CdnPoli votescience.ca
@EC_Kosters @CameronAhmad @KirstyDuncanMP @JustinTrudeau More generally, why end the only dedicated funding program for atmospheric and climate science? There has been programs for this — CFCAS then CCAR — for ~two decades because otherwise the research wouldn’t have support from other programs. Why stop now?
@EC_Kosters @KirstyDuncanMP @environmentca Previously the Minister has simply listed off a variety of funding programs without thought to whether those avenues were suitable. E.g., Discovery Grants, which are too small to support a medium size facility in the high Arctic.
@EC_Kosters @KirstyDuncanMP @environmentca To what funding program should they apply? There are a few reports that examine the funding landscape, e.g., NSERC’s CCAR assessment & an E4D report on climate science funding. Short version is that the govt ended the funding stream that could support PEARL and similar research.
Why #SavePEARL continues: Trudeau govt ends key funding program for atmospheric science (CCAR) that NSERC said was necessary to support research like PEARL. @KirstyDuncanMP: "we have said to the [PEARL] researchers very clearly that they will have to apply for funding" #cdnsci
@EC_Kosters @KirstyDuncanMP @environmentca PEARL is a useful way to trace govt support for atmospheric & climate science. In the early 2000s, there was an injection of funding through CFCAS that enabled it to launch. This was ended by Harper govt, downscaled to CCAR. Now CCAR gone... along with lots of research capacity.
@EC_Kosters @KirstyDuncanMP Originally the facility was built & operated by @environmentca (1990s). Budget cuts led to it be left unused in early 2000s. University group took it over and re-launched as PEARL mid-2000s but funding sources have been steadily eroded over the last ~ten years.
@NatObserver It’s frustrating to see @KirstyDuncanMP continuing to say PEARL researchers can simply apply for grants when her government ended the key funding program NSERC used to support 🇨🇦 atmospheric & climate science (CCAR).
Reminder that this Twitter chat is coming up next week! @DrTristanMcLean and @DanWeaver_ca will be talking about our report "Investing in Canadian Climate Science" which you can read here: bit.ly/2LhQHKY #CdnSci #SciComm
Govt of Canada spending $70 Billion on a climate plan. Yet, funding for fundamental atmospheric & climate science was not renewed or replaced. It's hard to understand how 🇨🇦 climate science is in crisis when our govt knows it's needed. nationalobserver.com/2019/06/21/opi… #cdnsci
