11/ Most of these problems come from how data centres get built, not from data centres themselves. Build smarter: smaller sites, local power and heat that gets used. The full KPMG report for the Department of Enterprise is here: enterprise.gov.ie/en/publication…
10/ Myth 6: data centres are massive and ugly. This one's fair. Huge grey sheds on the edge of town are a real problem for planning and for communities. We want to be part of the fix: a network of smaller sites inside buildings that already exist, alongside large ones only where they make sense.
1/ Data centres in Ireland get blamed for a lot: water, power, jobs, housing, noise and how they look. Some of it is fair and a lot of it isn't. Here are six common myths, checked against the numbers. 🧵
Cheap power is only part of the picture. Companies come to Ireland for the 12.5% corporate tax rate, a skilled English-speaking workforce, EU market access and data rules, and the fact that the big tech firms already run their European operations from here. That demand isn't going anywhere. We're just finding new ways to power it, with on-site CHP and the heat used locally.
What would you do with dedicated GPU capacity in Ireland?
Inference. Fine-tuning. Model serving. Rendering. Scientific compute. Private AI.
We’re talking to organisations now about the workloads Tandem should serve first.
Data centres produce heat. Pools pay to produce heat.
We think those two things should meet. Tandem is looking for sites across Ireland where distributed compute and useful heat demand can work together.
Our design keeps the environmental impact to a minimum. Our closed-loop cooling uses no water. The sites are quiet and small, inside buildings that already exist, so there's no big shed on the skyline. The power comes from on-site CHP, which means each unit of gas gets used three times: once for heat, once for the electricity that runs the compute, and again when the compute's own heat goes into the building.
@simoncarrolltw Absolutely, but CentreParcs deserve credit here: they already heat their pool with gas CHP. But Ireland is full of good candidates like it that are not taking advantage of CHP.
@MingtheMercil15 Not quite. Hyperscale cloud isn't going anywhere. But open-source models and distributed networks mean customers don't have to pay hyperscale prices for every workload, and the heat gets used locally too.
@BrazilTerence Fair point, and the new large energy user connection rules are set to address it going forward. Our model sidesteps it: we power compute with gas-fired CHP on site, and the host uses the heat, so they need less gas or electricity to heat their building.
