When teachers/admins worry about "tech cheating" - from Wikipedia to AI, I remember the words of my mentor in the 1970s: " If you ask kids a question they can answer by copying from the World Book, they'd have to be idiots to not copy from the World Book. And they're not idiots"
Should attendance be discussed when determining if a student receives credit for a class?
AI, such as ChatGPT, is NOT an enemy of education. It's a tool.
What if the number of preps a teacher had equaled the number of planning periods?
Recently a math teacher told me they didn't assign the same assignment as another class because they did not have the answer key. I had issues with this statement/reasoning. Thoughts?

Ultimately, #grading reform needs to be about the students, not the adults. Yes, teacher autonomy & philosophy is nice, but grading decisions have real consequences on students' lives. So when grades mean anything beyond mastery of standards, someone has a finger on the scale.
When students use AI to complete an assignment, they are simply taking the fastest route to the goal. The problem is that we've conditioned students that the goal of school is to get good grades, not to learn. If the goal is to learn, it gets much harder to "cheat" with AI.
Uncomfortable truth: Most kids don't misbehave because they are bad. They misbehave because they are bored --- or because they aren't convinced that what they are learning matters, or because they haven't seen evidence that they can succeed.
I was in a school last week where students take an elective where all they do is come up with projects that take the learning they are doing in core classes and apply it to the real world. There were some amazing cross-curricular, community-focused projects happening in there.
I used to think the big assessment that covered a bunch of standards at the end of the unit was what really mattered. Now, that's just a box to check for school expectations. I care a lot more about the smaller tasks that give me targeted evidence along the way.
You can vent about the difficulties of teaching and still love teaching. You can complain about being a teacher and still be grateful that you are a teacher. You can state that teachers, students and schools deserve better, and still love your district and school.
Being blamed for things beyond my control is very frustrating.

One of the ideas in education that I continue to struggle with are rigid pacing guides that teachers are expected to follow. The result -- especially when districts monitor implementation -- is that teaching is prioritized over learning.
