Amanda Gorman reminds us that words have the power to inspire, challenge, and transform. As the youngest inaugural poet in United States history, she captured the attention of the world with a message of hope, courage, and possibility. Through poetry and storytelling, she continues to encourage a new generation to use their voices to pursue justice and build a more compassionate future. During Women’s History Month, we honor Amanda Gorman’s voice and the impact of her words. #TheKingCenter #MLK #WomensHistoryMonth #BelovedCommunity #AmandaGorman

During Women’s History Month, I am reflecting with gratitude on my mother, Coretta Scott King, whose courage and conviction helped reshape our world. Her faith in the power of women continues to inspire me and so many others to carry the work forward. #CorettaScottKing #WomensHistoryMonth #BelovedCommunity #MLK

Even in moments of deep conflict, grief, and division across our nation and around the world, we must guard against the temptation to dehumanize one another. Nonviolence challenges us to confront harmful actions while still recognizing the humanity of every person. When we lose that discipline, violence multiplies and the possibility of transformation fades. The work of building the Beloved Community requires courage, moral clarity, and the willingness to resist hatred in every form. #MLK #Nonviolence365 #BelovedCommunity

106 year-old William Casby holding his great-great-granddaughter. He was born into slavery in Danville, Virginia in 1857, worked as a longshoreman, and lived to be 113, photograph by Richard Avedon, 1963.... Casby was born into slavery in 1857 in Danville, Virginia, just four years before the Civil War began. Emancipated as a child after 1865, he came of age during Reconstruction and later worked as a longshoreman. By the time this photograph was taken, he had witnessed slavery, the Civil War’s aftermath, Jim Crow segregation, two World Wars, and the early years of the Civil Rights Movement. Avedon photographed Casby as part of a series documenting people who had been born into slavery, creating minimalist portraits against stark white backgrounds to focus entirely on the subject’s presence and expression. The image is both intimate and monumental, the elder’s weathered face beside the softness of new life. Casby reportedly lived to be 113. When Casby was born, James Buchanan was president and Abraham Lincoln had not yet been elected, yet he lived long enough to see the presidency of John F. Kennedy and the dawn of the modern civil rights era. © History Pictures #archaeohistories

Frances Ellen Watkins Harper was born free in Baltimore in 1825, but freedom did not mean safety. By the time she was a teenager, she understood that education was both a shield and a weapon. Orphaned young, she was raised by relatives who ran a school for Black children. Books became her foundation. Words became her power. When Maryland passed laws forbidding free Black people from entering the state, Harper left her home rather than live under the threat of enslavement. She turned that exile into purpose. As a poet, lecturer, and abolitionist, she traveled across the country speaking against slavery—often as one of the few women, and even more rarely as a Black woman, commanding the stage. Her poetry did not whisper. It confronted. She wrote about enslaved mothers, about moral hypocrisy, about the cost of injustice. After the Civil War, she refused to retreat from public life. She fought for Black civil rights and women’s suffrage, challenging white suffragists who were willing to abandon Black men to win the vote. Harper insisted freedom could not be selective. In 1896, she helped found the National Association of Colored Women, urging women to “lift as we climb.” That phrase wasn’t a slogan. It was a strategy. Education. Economic independence. Community building. Frances Ellen Watkins Harper understood something many reformers missed: that poetry could move hearts, but policy had to change lives. She worked for both. © Women In World History #archaeohistories

The last of his people, Tame Horomona Rehe, photographed in 1925... This man was often described as “the last of his people”, but that phrase tells only part of the story. Tame Horomona Rehe (also known as Tommy Solomon) is frequently referred to as the last full-blooded Moriori. The Moriori are the Indigenous Polynesian people of the Chatham Islands (Rēkohu), located east of mainland New Zealand. In the 19th century, the Moriori population was devastated by invasion, enslavement, disease, and land dispossession after Māori groups from mainland New Zealand arrived in 1835. By the late 1800s, their numbers had dramatically declined. However, the idea that Tame Horomona Rehe was “the last Moriori” is historically misleading. While he may have been considered the last person of unmixed Moriori ancestry at the time, Moriori descendants continue today. Cultural revitalization efforts in recent decades have restored language, identity, and recognition of Moriori history. In 2021, the New Zealand government signed a formal settlement with Moriori representatives, acknowledging historical injustices and providing redress nearly two centuries after the invasion. © History Pictures #archaeohistories
