Most first chapters should start two scenes later.

Don’t aim for “surprising.” Aim for “unavoidable but unforeseen.”
A good ending answers the question, but a great one changes it.
Readers want resolution, not epilogues disguised as Wikipedia entries.
If your ending feels like a “twist for twist’s sake,” it’s a gimmick, not closure.
A weak ending poisons the memory of a strong book.
Prologues work only if they change the story when cut - but most don’t.
Readers skip bad prologues - but they don’t skip good first chapters.
A prologue that explains everything kills curiosity.
If your prologue could be chapter one, it should be.
Most prologues fail because they’re just throat-clearing.
If your dialogue groans under exposition, cut it and narrate. Readers will respect you more for that.
Strong exposition is brief - and weak exposition wears a name-tag and introduces itself to everyone at the party.
Exposition disguised as dialogue is still just exposition.
People don’t explain things they both already know, and neither should your characters.
Expository dialogue sounds like two actors reciting Wikipedia.
If your characters explain the world to each other, you’re just writing an instruction manual.
Good prose serves story - and purple prose serves ego.
