Finally found a rare status symbol I can covet! Through a laborious process, a team at @wakehurst_kew have found a way to enable black poplars to sexually reproduce again & I’m now the proud owner of one of the first such unique genotype black poplars in the UK…
A key problem with blithely saying ‘build on low quality green belt’ is the opportunity cost. Green belt need not remain low quality - it can be managed better, or chunks could be rewilded. Once built on that opportunity is lost, perhaps for centuries.
🌱 Introducing RMAVIS, our new #RShiny app for assigning vegetation plot data to GB National Vegetation Classification (NVC) communities. It succeeds MAVIS, used widely by UK researchers, ecologists & NGOs. ➡️ ceh.ac.uk/rmavis 1/2
JOB ALERT - please share! 📢 We are looking for a Reserves Officer (North) to take a leading role in driving nature’s recovery across our patch, showcasing our wild spaces to the highest standards. 1/3
🌱Ecologists and biodiversity specialists – your expertise is needed! Contribute to research on unrecorded forest biodiversity by answering this survey: app.onlinesurveys.jisc.ac.uk/s/leeds/forest… This is part of my PhD research at the University of Leeds. I’d be grateful for your input🌳 🧵1/9

"The seed is what’s important for the species” 🌱 Our experts recently spoke to @PositiveNewsUK about rare Black poplar trees 🌳 We're racing to secure a future for them through cuttings, seed collections and genetic research. Read more: ow.ly/q4iY50Q74Qy
Irreplaceable habitats and BNG: what you need to know defralanduse.blog.gov.uk/2023/10/05/irr… Among the many other reasons to view BNG with a deep scepticism, is the fact that no ancient or semi-natural grasslands are regarded as irreplaceable. That includes 5000 years old chalk downland.
While collecting local, ‘wild’ seed for restoration seems a good idea, we still have poor understanding of the impacts on source populations & communities Especially what will be the consequences of scaling up of restoration activities sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

@ZekeMarshall3 @wakehurst_kew Thanks! I hope my amateur summary of your amazing work was ok and didn’t contain any big blunders.
The thrill of discovery when it just might kill a mine:
Just made a discovery at the proposed kitty litter mining exploration site. They claim despite drilling 200' down they will not hit groundwater. I just found a previously undocumented wetland uphill from the drill sites, indicating a high likelihood of them hitting groundwater!
The subfamily Pteridophylloideae (#Papaveraceae) is monotypic: There is just one species, Pteridophyllum racemosum (fern #poppy), from Honshu, Japan. The indeterminate inflorescence is just one of the unique features of this species. 📷: Yoshimasa Uchiyama CCBY4
Mud Sedge (Carex limosa), part of a small 'ark' population maintained in cultivation at @NosterfieldLNR habitat creation nursery. Now restricted to 2 upland sites in Yorkshire, there were historic records from several lowland raised mires including Leckby Carr & Tanfield Carr.
Nice half day at work yesterday, star find being Goldilocks buttercup which is really quite scarce from Perthshire northwards, & this was in East Sutherland! Intermediate wintergreen also good for the area & the nearby pyramidal bugle popn was looking grand.
