There is no economic justification for DSA to lay off 8 staffers. The NPC has voted to pay DSA & YDSA board members (themselves) instead of staff. Even with that fact, 8 layoffs are unnecessary. They are unwilling to publicly defend their position because it is indefensible.

NPC member behavior is further proof that 7 layoffs are not economically justified. Below is further proof we included in our Grievance.
These grievances were filed in response to Bad Faith negotiation, layoffs without Economic Justification, attempts to replace union workers with new non-union jobs, and retaliation against union staff for their speech outside of work duties.
On March 28th, the DSA Union filed multiple grievances against several NPC Board Members.
It seems like the union has tried everything to negotiate in good faith and the NPC has continually refused to bring anything to meetings and push through their preferred version of events. Now the proposed MOU wants to make them at will employees. Does that sound right to you?

We opened meetings to members and held closed meetings so that they could speak frankly after they refused to speak in front of members. We held an informal meeting to let them know we would respond accordingly if they did not attempt to negotiate. We have reached that point.
This MOU is an insult. It is a final expression of the NPC board’s contempt toward our contract and disregard for the legal negotiation process. We communicated very clearly that we wanted to negotiate.
- Included a provision that the Union will not restrict the right of DSA to impose any future layoffs, which would make our employment at-will. -Included a provision that the Union will withdraw all grievances & forfeit the right to contest any currently pending layoffs
In their MOU, they: •Changed the intent of the MOU to “resolve a pending dispute and grievance” but failed to address any of our grievances. •Imposed an imminent deadline to volunteer for layoffs with severance in order to pressure us to give up negotiations.
The NPC board responded by offering an insulting MOU earlier this week. Not only did they fail to address our grievances, they regressed on much of their original language and stated that they “do not intend to bargain the number of layoffs.” Their MOU: docs.google.com/document/d/1Vm…

Update: The NPC majority has declined to attend tonight's meeting, so we are going to cancel it. We plan to invite the NPC to a private meeting and bargain our MOU. Time is of the essence, as our layoffs notice mark May 25th as the last day for seven unit members.
