Does the logic behind required & graded summer work hold up under scrutiny? Take a look at the example below. Students are assessed to gauge understanding w/o first being provided formal instruction. Then using the resulting data in summative grade calculations. Why do this?

Follow Up: in the past few days, I've seen job postings in 4 diff districts for curriculum guide writing w/redundancies in multiple courses w/payouts totaling over $90K. We are smarter than this - there is a better way to spend this $$$ to benefit kids!

In contrast, Oregon, with the lowest demographic-adjusted scores, has a Board of Education that has indefinitely "paused" since 2020 the use of any standardized test as a graduation requirement Most of this stuff isn't rocket science
Mississippi has the best demographic-adjusted NAEP (4th & 8th grade) scores now The "Mississippi Miracle" started in 2012 when the Republican governor/legislature introduced phonics-based instruction and began to hold back ~10% of 3rd graders per year who fail a reading test

I love this rubric and commentary. In a standards-based educational system, students should not have to "go beyond the standard" to receive full credit/the highest point total. Mastery is hitting the bullseye.
