Hot take: a VR port shouldn't start with the gameplay, it should start with where the player's eyes and hands are. Camera, UI and input decide if it feels like the game or like a tech demo. Fix those first and the rest of the game is mostly already there, I think.

Flat-game devs port their menus to VR and keep the pause screen as a full-screen overlay. In VR there's no screen, so it sits glued to your face. I think the fix is a world-space panel at arm's length that the player can grab. Comfort starts with where the UI lives.
