mayor @JohnTory has put a respectable face on rob ford's austerity agenda, cutting city services while increasing the police budget, which he's proposing to do again today with cameras tory says what he thinks we want to hear, then votes to keep killing us. he's gotta go

the TTC mandatory face mask plan does not include enforcement. instead, transit officials will hand out masks for free this is the approach we should always take, knowing that enforcement always targets poor and racialized peeps. help us be safe instead of punishing us

In response to widespread calls to defund police & invest in communities - borne of rampant police killings of Black and Indigenous people across Toronto and Canada -the city votes instead for on an increase in police funding for “reforms” already known to be ineffective. Shame.

On a very basic level, I still don’t feel like white publishers get the concept of #OwnVoices, and the dances they’re doing to justify their arguments is a little concerning. Look at your lists and have honest conversations. We need books by AND about marginalized voices...

ugh sucks that this has to be said but i'm gonna: if any author/artist/editor/agent/creative of any kind that i work with or know has been a creep or worse to you, PLEASE, i beg you, tell me. i will believe you and respect your wishes for how you want that info handled.

PSA for white leadership in publishing: if you're going to ask your BIPOC employees and colleagues to sit in meetings about how to fix this industry, please actually come into the room willing to listen and hear some difficult truths. Leave your defensiveness at the door.

BIPOC authors are expected to do triple duty: write the book, educate your editors/publisher's staff, AND be paraded around to show how good things are getting. It's not fair and just another reason why only publishing diversely cannot be the end of the conversation.

really glad that black anti-racist authors are getting the recognition - and $$$$ - they deserve but i don't wanna see one publishing person patting themselves on the back for this. maybe actually read and sit with the work that you're 'so proud' to be publishing and ACT on it.

This. Right. Here. Read this thread 👇🏽 Publishing has A LOT of work to do. But there are BIPOC on the Inside collectively fighting, pushing for change. We take small wins when we can, it’s about endurance. Thank you @coloringbooks for this & reminding us how hard the work is!

FACTS: We don’t have more Black Canadian kid lit b/c the ppl in power don’t have the expertise to recognize and/or acquire Black talent OR they don’t REALLY care about Black Canadian stories. They’ll say they don’t know where to find us. But I said what I said and I meant it.
