@new_data_ @somewheresy If the price went down 1000x, the number of these games hitting the market would go way up too, and then average revenue would get even lower. Endless sea of slop!

@Lizquidity Oh no, I wasn't emotionally prepared to remember the tragedy of the Irminsul when I started reading this tweet

@kb_french @d08890 Oh yeah, here it is: "Do I mean then that [...] an idol is anything? No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons" - well, I'm glad 1) I have the discernment to just disbelieve this and 2) most normie Christians don't let this stop them from being decent to others.

@JesseHughesNC Christians already had their one (and only) opportunity to rule over most of the world's Hindus, and that didn't happen.

@XianyangCB Question: if the court later upgrades the offender's punishment to the nine exterminations, will the winning bidder get to keep the concubines as a good-faith purchaser for value, or will they revert to the state?

@RayPeephole @LordWolfeNJ @DrClownPhD Sniff test for this argument: do white jurors convict black defendants 34% of the time or less? Because if they don't, it's impossible for black jurors to triple the rate. (I've been out of the legal profession for years, but IIRC 34% would be a strikingly low jury conviction %)

@haravayin_hogh You skipped the Song dynasty volume, right? That's when it arose, so if Cambridge covers it that's probably where. (Honestly I'd recommend going back to Song. There's a lot more to it's politics, economy, and intellectual life than court intrigue.)

@Sorcerer0fEld @Sturgeons_Law Maybe that's why Persian-miniature-derived art is more successful when transplanted to the Indian context; not tainted by commercialism from its inception.

@MENAhnenerbe @bathcat The dynasty didn't just lurch from failure to failure, for sure, but I'm saying Song dynasty was Imperial China at its peak: meritocracy functioning at its best, eunuch influence at its lowest, the world's first print industry, China leading the world in tech and development.

@MENAhnenerbe @bathcat The Hongwu and Yongle Emperors kicked the Ming off with traditions of political violence and secret-police repression, and they structurally hobbled the government to require an enormous amount of work from the emperor. They were able to keep up with it, but later heirs weren't.

@JonathanCl62034 @GigachadessMain I think this is a point most people recognize in the context of modern colonialism, and the basic principles are at play here too.

@JonathanCl62034 @GigachadessMain Let's put it this way - a Saxon ruling class wouldn't have inflicted the Harrying of the North on the people, and local Balkan rulers weren't going to practice the devşirme system on their own people. Foreign rulers over a conquered populace unlock new levels of cruelty.

@JonathanCl62034 @GigachadessMain Their Anglo-Saxon culture, language, and beliefs (or Bulgarian, Greek, etc.) weren't part of what made them lesser under native rule though. Foreign elites bring whole new dimensions to your subordination.

@JonathanCl62034 @GigachadessMain I've read the same argument as an excuse for the Ottoman conquest of the Balkans - the idea that it's ok that foreign colonizers to come in and live off the people's surplus (while treating those people as second-class subjects) because hey, the existing society was unequal too.
