They don’t know what else to do & there genuinely isn’t another answer. The “learn a trade” mantra is PURE nonsense & in the current business environment created by this government, so is the apprenticeship one. So what they’ve done here instead is chosen 3-4 years of limbo.

The problem with UK devolution chat is that it’s often divide and rule. You can’t do one big nepotism investment in one northern place without every city or region quite rightly demanding their own govt dept. You have to decentralise everything or it all stays in London.
London should not get another penny until Manchester and Birmingham get an Underground, Leeds gets an extensive Tram system and the trans Pennine is fully electrified to Hull.
We need 4 or 5 more Crossrail projects.
Birmingham by far and away the most interesting city in Britain - the real capital, not London. Its relative decline a much better mirror to the rest of the country than Manchester or Bristol or Edinburgh. The actually existing UK, good and bad and the rest on display almost everywhere you go. Richest place to report on and to have conversations with people. Also has the best botanical gardens (maybe not relevant to the point I’m trying to make). The fact that no one has written a gigantic teeming Tom Wolfe / Dickens style brick called Second City shames British writers, journalists, novelists, publishers.
