Conversations in financial circles teetered on the edge of panic: "People are going to die from this crash." "We're going to see a lot of casualties." For those familiar with margin trading, the plunge wasn't just a wipeout of profits. The dreaded "margin call" loomed large, turning their faces ashen. A single-day drop of 12.4% carried the sort of shock value that made such grim predictions feel all too plausible. Who could have anticipated the record 3,217-point rebound the next day? Few. Most retail investors, lost in the fog of uncertainty, couldn’t muster the courage to buy aggressively. The Man Who Didn't Flinch Amid the frenzy, one name flashed through my mind: Tatsuro Kiyohara. The bestselling author of "My Investment Strategy," which sold over 200,000 copies, must have had a strategy for this chaos, right? Note: Kiyohara, having lost his voice, responded to my questions in writing, which I have restructured for clarity. Deploying 23 Billion Yen Question: Where were you on August 5? "I was in Nikko on vacation. Around 1 PM, I left Lake Chuzenji and headed home in torrential rain, finally arriving at 5 PM. I learned of the crash only after I got home. Had I still been a fund manager, I'd have picked up on the news and taken action from a rest stop." "My first reaction was sheer disbelief—why such a dramatic drop? The world wasn't ending. My next thought: I have to buy. My brokerage account had 23 billion yen in cash. I planned to use it all. If the market fell further, I'd transfer funds from my bank account." Question: So, you went on a buying spree? "That night, uncertain about the U.S. market, I hoped for a U.S. crash—a perfect buying opportunity for Japanese stocks. Orders had to be placed in small lots: 30,000 shares per order for large stocks like Mizuho Bank. That meant 100 orders for 3 million shares. Mind-numbing work." "I started placing orders immediately; no time for a bath. I ignored emails asking for explanations on the crash. My focus was on buying. I'd figure out the reasons later." "SBI Securities on iPad doesn’t save your PIN. The interface is a nightmare, leading to frequent errors and immense frustration. Midway, the app glitched and saved my PIN. That was scary but helpful. By 10 PM, I was done placing orders." Defying the Hedge Funds Question: What did you do next? "Finally, I settled down to watch recorded TV programs on the economy. The commentary was appalling. Critics blamed the Bank of Japan (BoJ) for the crash! Ridiculous. I applauded the BoJ for stopping extreme yen depreciation with just a 0.25% policy rate hike. Remarkable." "Yen depreciation can’t be halted by intervention—it requires selling dollars, which has limits. Hedge funds had been mocking Japan, but the BoJ's decisive action showed the world Japan still had effective policies. It was a powerful message: 'Hedge funds, beware. We won't be pushed around.'" Question: What caused the market crash? "Of course, rapid prior stock price increases played a role. But outside of AI and semiconductor manufacturing equipment, there wasn’t a bubble. Japan barely has any AI stocks. The critical 'arbitrage buy-sell' balance I monitor was around 700 million shares. Alerts trigger at 500 million; danger signals at 1 billion. No alerts this time." The Real Bubble: Yen Selling In his book, Kiyohara explains arbitrage balances extensively. He didn’t see this as a dangerously bearish market. "The clear bubble was in 'yen selling, dollar buying' positions. Greedy hedge funds were exploiting: Interest rate differentials, Profiting from yen depreciation, Gaining from Japanese stocks due to yen weakness. This triple play was primarily hedge fund-driven dollar-yen carry trades." "While firms like JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs aren’t executing trades worth 500 trillion yen, a yen-dollar exchange rate hitting 120 could bankrupt some hedge funds. But it’s just noise, irrelevant to the overall market." Carry trades involve borrowing low-interest currencies to invest in higher-interest ones, profiting from the rate differential. Kiyohara argues hedge funds deserved losses from unwinding yen-dollar positions after profiting from yen depreciation for so long. Failures like LTCM and Archegos didn’t impact the market significantly. Question: How did your buy orders fare? "For Me, It Was Like a Fire Drill" "Despite placing so many buy orders, I initially didn’t secure a single share. I thought, 'Thank goodness I’m retired.' Not buying at these levels would be a fund manager’s disgrace." "Later, I discovered I'd bought 10.5 billion yen worth of megabank shares. Just one stock, but a relief. Now, I look forward to a leisurely life on dividends." "This drop was market noise without substance. I believe the Japanese stock market will recover. Future performance will depend on corporate strength, but ongoing share buybacks suggest sustained price increases." "Since retiring last November, I hadn’t placed any stock orders. I struggled with PINs but quickly got back in the groove. This crash was like a fire drill for me."

Too much leverage in the global financial system with Japanese yen strength and overdone treasury yield declines a key to the unwind. I’m not buying the small recovery from morning bottoms. Not selling either. Markets too volatile with bid/ask spreads extremely wide.
