And in the wake of this man-made disaster, we are left in the debris and horror of incalculable hatred. Hate must be considered a public health emergency. It manifests itself as racism, homophobia, religious discrimination, sexism, ageism, and a whole host of other injustices.
I regret to announce that we have lost our first doctor, Dr Mohammed Ali, a Tanzanian National, 37yr old Male today at 3:15am. He tested positive of Ebola on Sept 26, 2022 and died while receiving treatment at Fort Portal RRH, Isolation facility ( JMedic).
Uganda has successfully contained Ebola before, relying on tried and true public health interventions. Rapid identification of cases and learning who they came in contact with, supportive quarantine for people exposed, and community-tailored risk communication messages. 4/thread
Ebolavirus is an umbrella term for 6 “species” or “strains”, 4 of which are known to cause disease in humans. Since 1976, the Zaire species has been responsible for several outbreaks, including the 2014 - 2016 Ebola outbreak in West Africa that impacted the globe. 1/thread
Uganda has increased its preparedness for emerging disease outbreaks by launching their national action plan. The Office of the Prime Minister and supporting agencies are still focusing on the importance of preparedness while managing emerging outbreaks, including Ebola.
This Labor Day, we honor everyone who has been managing the stress and uncertainty of working during #COVID19. We now have a chance to think about a new path forward. What do you think workplaces must do to be sources of well-being in the future?
Why did the U.S. and other countries fail the pandemic test?
What can we learn from countries that performed better in limiting the harms of COVID-19 and other diseases?
I address these questions in a new op-ed for @usnews. bit.ly/3wA1OpH
Today's decision is a major step backward for public health. Reproductive health decisions – like all health decisions – should be made by patients and their health care providers. 1/7
GOOD NEWS! 🥳
The #Ebola outbreak in #DRC🇨🇩 has now been declared over by @MinSanteRDC after just over 2 months! No new confirmed cases have been reported since 30th October.
Congratulations to national authorities and the people of DRC! 👉🏿bit.ly/3pZAoW0
Social distancing, even at 3.0m, leads to an upper bound of 90% for risk of SARS2 infection after a few minutes. When both ppl wear mask, upper bound remains below 30% after 1 h, but, when both wear a well-fitting FFP2 mask, it is just 0.4%. pnas.org/content/118/49… via @PNASNews
Delta is highly transmissible and Omicron may be even more infectious. We're dealing with different versions of the virus, which is why masks are still important indoors—even if you're vaccinated.
All countries need to scale up and enhance efforts against Delta now, which will benefit Omicron, whatever way this VOC unfolds.
Drive/keep transmission down AND increase vaccination coverage in those most at risk in ALL countries now.
Vigilance. Focus. Strength. @WHO#COVID19

Based on my experience with @DrJayVarma and Dr. Ted Long leading the Covid-19 response in New York City, we believe that public health leaders require five essential skills to effectively manage the next pandemic. 🧵👇🏾

To date, less than 6% of Africans are vaccinated against #COVID19, compared to some 60% in the developed world, & added to this we are now seeing #SouthAfrica penalised for its transparent action in reporting a new variant. This is highly regrettable, to say the very least.
We still have a lot to learn about Omicron and how best to protect people. But it's clear that global cooperation is essential, and we must work together to increase vaccination coverage. to.pbs.org/3DpKdkZ
Covid has laid bare gaps in epidemic preparedness across the world. Strong leadership in the face of public health emergencies is essential, and @ResolveTSL convened teams in Ethiopia, Liberia, Nigeria and Uganda to accelerate preparedness efforts.
Congratulations to the teams from Ethiopia and Liberia that presented their lessons learned and recommendations on the path forward to become better prepared for future epidemics following their participation in our Preparedness Team Workshop Series.
Higher vaccination coverage ➡️ Less impact from COVID-19. Appropriate public health measures are also important. Data available here: healthdata.gov/Health/COVID-1…
Monday just in: +610K doses reported administered over yesterday's total, including 293K newly vaccinated. Important news from the FDA today: fda.gov/news-events/pr…
