Any tips? yes, you have to stop or certainly reduce. Every time you shout you are “grabbing” their attentional focus at a time when we want the players to improve their scanning , what to attend to and how they use this to influence their next action or decision👍

Major things academies struggle with/get wrong: Having kids play on big pitches. Totally unnecessary. Shifts focus to physicality over technicality. Small sided games/futsal, high touch & dribble volume, risk taking encouraged, until at least 14/15 years old should be the way.…

This is a great post. The problem is adults can’t make money off this model😂🤦🏻♂️. Youth sports aren’t really about the kids.

Kev, coaches, adults, volunteers etc can continue this “race to the 11v11 finish line” but we will NOT be doing our children any favours. We are trying to develop children to be successful in the rest of their lives NOT in the next match😡

Coaches who adhere to evidence-based best practices often struggle in the pay-to-play system. The reason seems to be that parents prefer coaches who rely on extrinsic motivators due to the fact that the kids have already had any hint of intrinsic motivation badgered out of them.
As a coach, if you tell a player “trust the process”, or that you have a plan for them, they should 100% be able to ask questions about said process/plan. If you don’t answer them/get defensive, it’s because you’re full of it. It’s spring though, I’m sure this isn’t an issue…
The authoritarian parent style seems to create the appearance of discipline without actually fostering it. The same goes for the hardass coach. Leading by fear and punishment creates the facade of respect, buy-in, and discipline. It's short-lived.
If you are a coach or director overseeing a 2nd/3rd/etc. team and the only reason the players have for being there is the hope of one day moving up to the 1st team, you are failing at your job.
The kids who come to college used to being motivated by mom, dad, or coach often don’t make it. That motivation works in the short term, but it quickly fades. To be successful over the long haul, we all need motivation that comes from deep within: thegrowtheq.com/quit-trying-to…
What research says will help a club excel at talent development: 1) Reducing barriers to access 2) Providing spaces for unstructured, mixed-age play 3) Cultivating task-oriented mindsets through transformational coaching What won’t: 1) Joining a fancy league
What should parents do/say at their kids game? Study on elite junior tennis players offered advice: 1. Do not Provide Technical/Tactical Advice 2. Comment on Effort or Attitude not Performance 3. Respect the sports etiquette 4. Match Nonverbal Behaviors with Supportive Comments
There are tremendous coaches at every level. There are also terrible coaches at all levels.
Any youth coaches out there, please consider this when you’re forcing your 12 year olds to pass out from the back in your designed patterns of play, or you restrict them to certain zones etc. Let them play and learn the game THEIR way.

You get what you tolerate. It happens at every level. Be hard on the right things. Set strong expectations and follow through. Poor character from kids/parents will destroy your team.

Hard disagree. Kids shouldn't have to give up their childhood for an overpriced rec league.
This is a parody account right? Is this @MoneyGrabFC 's burner?
Part of sucking at predicting talent development is being more focused on prediction than development.
Part of sucking at predicting talent development is being more focused on prediction than development.
We suck at predicting talent development. We're not good at it. Accept that. Now, if that's the case, why wouldn't we want to keep more people in the pipeline to see how they develop? Too often, especially in youth sports, we talent ID too quickly. We're fooling ourselves.

@sturge_p any tips to coaches who shout? I’m one of them. I want to stop but haven’t found a technique. It feels an involuntary action to shout terms like ‘press’, ‘down the line’ etc. I think know what not to shout, but am struggling with vocalising instructions in a better way.

@hbrooks_coach saw this piece on TikTok and was interested to see your thoughts? Thought redknapp made a fantastic point?
@ESPN_Schick Parents are the problem in youth sports. Then coaches. Then the monetary drivers…tournaments. The kids are not the issue. Youth sports is a mess. And it is becoming unaffordable for the average family.
Story on the latest sign of youth sports culture: Our 10U baseball team played a game yesterday. Opposing parents chirping at our 3rd base coach. Opposing parents yelling at umpires after calls that don’t go their way, adding “it’s us vs the umps!” Opposing player gets…
I see a group of U15 players play in different scenarios in diff levels. Some play ECNL, E64, "regular" club, and Travel and there's overlap amongst these three competitions. The ECNL and E64 players cannot take control of a travel game. 1/2

@joecampos It’s a major red flag for me when parents demand it. Re: emotional maturity. The ups&downs these players face due to being behind physically&tactically is one of the biggest challenges I’ve faced with them. Even brilliant players struggle with handling those emotions.
“Playing up”. Alongside “elite” leagues it’s another misguided way parents try to claim their child has advanced abilities or is “elite”. The truth is youth players should almost always play at their own age. Playing up may be appropriate when a player is well beyond their…
Dear Youth Coaches ✏️ Please do not sub kids out for making a mistake. Instead… ▪️Expect mistakes and strengthen a player’s capacity to play beyond them. #TOVO
This is a great post. The problem is adults can’t make money off this model😂🤦🏻♂️. Youth sports aren’t really about the kids.
Erling Haaland is a generational talent. He was the product of an outlier youth program in Norway. Researchers investigate his team cohort, this is what they found:
Here's A Thought We All Know That A Very Small Percentage Of Any Of The Players At Your Clubs Are Going To Make It To College Or Pro Yet So Many Of You Are Still Designing Your Youth Soccer Programs With This As The End Goal. You Are Serving 5% Of Your Players At Best.
@sturge_p @D10Football All About Adults Too Worried About Themselves Rather Than Getting The Kids Playing
Kev, coaches, adults, volunteers etc can continue this “race to the 11v11 finish line” but we will NOT be doing our children any favours. We are trying to develop children to be successful in the rest of their lives NOT in the next match😡
@number_6teen @DoctorKoolBeans @sturge_p The adult backlash on this is going to be interesting to say the least. I'm struggling to get through to even playing 5v5 now for u8s.
This is the way forward for MLS. More clubs need to do this and also we need to make soccer more affordable and not be all about money for the kids to be able to play. Invest in the youth and you will see huge payoffs for MLS and the USMNT 🇺🇸
San Diego FC will feature MLS's first residential academy with an integrated grade 6-12 school when it enters the league next year. Now, the club knows who will lead it: Alianza de Futbol founder Joaquin Escoto. @PaulTenorio on the hire: theathletic.com/5421404/2024/0…
This. Is. Coaching. End. Of. 👏👏
Person first. Athlete second. ALWAYS Person first.
Free play isn’t just for fun. It’s directly linked to offensive creativity in all invasion games. And there is evidence that it makes players better defenders too:
How are elite soccer defenders made? It is not the amount of practice they get or how much film they watch. It starts earlier than that 🧵:
If you’re a great coach… don’t hide what makes you great. Share it. You’ll impact a hell of a lot more players if you make coaches better. Too many egos in the sport that say “I’m not sharing my secrets.” We are literally all in this together.
If you want to make it to the CL semi finals, you can’t play second halves like this.
