Metastatic nasal lymphoma in a mandibular lymph node aspirate from a cat: Large neoplastic lymphocytes (arrows, image 1) are seen among a mixed population of small lymphocytes and a few reactive lymphocytes (arrowhead, image 1). Tumor cells were being phagocytized (image 2).
And now for the modified Wright’s stain showing the bilirubin crystal from the urine sediment in our previous post in all its gold glory (arrow)😀 All those leukocytes are deteriorating in the background (urine is not a nice environment to be hanging around in).
Urine crystals are so pretty: Bilirubin (arrow) and struvite (arrowhead). There are also numerous leukocytes, indicating pyuria.
A prostatic wash in a 10 year old Bull Mastiff mix revealed clusters of neoplastic epithelial cells, some of which were undergoing necrosis. The tumor cells showed striking criteria of malignancy. The tumor could have arisen from the prostate or prostatic urethra.
Nicoletella semolina in a suppurative tracheal wash from a 2 month old foal. This pleomorphic gram negative rod is thought to be a secondary opportunistic pathogen. The primary problem may have been a concurrent Streptococcus equi subspecies zooepidemicus infection.
Mesothelioma in a dog: A cytologic feature of mesothelial cells (reactive or neoplastic) is that they often form clusters that circle (acinar-like) or are associated with pink matrix cores (arrow). This feature can help identify their origin in body cavity effusions.
Peritoneal fluid from a dog with right sided heart failure. The fluid was a high protein transudate with erythrophages, which is an expected result. The unexpected finding was bile casts within macrophages (arrows, first image), supporting liver injury and cholestasis.
Another image from our last post (dog with sialodenitis and a sialocele): Gotta love those gorgeous hematoidin crystals, indicating hemorrhage in a hypoxic environment.
Submandibular swelling in a 2 year old Siberian Husky: The cytologic features were typical of a sialocele, with erythrophages indicating hemorrhage (short arrow). An unusual finding were clusters of deep blue epithelial cells with associated mucus (long arrow), a reactive change.
Aspirate from a cystic structure associated with the coelom of a chicken (suspect cloacal diverticulum): ✅ Two ovoid purple Iodamoeba (gut commensal) ✅ Many mixed bacteria ✅ Variably sized light pink-red granular egg material with a non-staining “wall”
Check out the aberrant mitotic figures in tumor cells in an aspirate of aqueous humor from a 12 year old cat with uveitis due to lymphoma.

Suspect mesothelioma in a peritoneal fluid aspirate from a 10 year old dog: Smears of the fluid contained “balls” and papillary-like structures if relatively uniform cells that resembled mesothelial cells. The cells were undergoing necrosis (upper right, second image).
Aspirate of a mediastinal mass in a 4 year old dog: Large lymphocytes with a focus of red granules in the cytoplasm (arrow, image 4) dominate with a few small lymphocytes (arrows, images 1-3). A lymphoma of granular lymphocytes is rare in this location.
Very hungry macrophages😫 Hemophagocytic histiocytic sarcoma in a liver aspirate from a 9 year old Golden Retriever. The cells demonstrated prominent erythrophagia. Note the binucleated erythrophagocytic macrophage with large nuclei (arrow, second image).
Blood smear from a cat: There are numerous Heinz bodies, which are readily visualized in ghost red blood cells and reflect oxidant injury. The cat had hemoglobinuria, indicating concurrent intravascular hemolysis. The cause of the oxidant injury was not ascertained in this case.
Xanthine crystals in urine from two dogs on allopurinol therapy. The crystals can be misidentified as ammonium biurate but they are insoluble in hydrochloric acid (HCl) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH, < 1N). Ammonium biurate are soluble in HCl and NaOH.

Blood smear from a 3-year-old cat: Macrophages containing phagocytic debris in their cytoplasm were present at the feathered edge. These cells in blood indicate underlying disease, which in this case was feline infectious peritonitis.
