Today I watched my 4.5yo son greet a peer for the first time ever at his autism therapy center. He walked right up to the kid and said “hi Theo.” This may not seem like a big deal, but it was a major leap for him and gives me hope he will make/sustain friendships someday.

Were you the “good kid” who “parents never had to worry about”? Watch out for those kids. They may turn up in therapy 10-20 years later with repressed emotions, overfunctioning, and the inability to ask for help because they’ve always had to be perfect.
In a chaotic, ever-quickening, non-stop culture therapeutic silence is awkward then frightening then cathartic.

It's amazing how quickly I can kill the vibe when folks are chatting it up about how they're not "that kind of therapist," as in, they use a ton of self-disclosure, tell their patients they love them, they cry & hug their patients, & I'm just like "yeah I do none of that, ever."
Becoming a therapist is a beautiful thing because you tend to become more of who you truly are. It's painful and scary and confusing but also refining and energizing and liberating.
Instead of asking yourself why you’re so lazy, ask yourself why you might need so much rest.
Hot take: even psychoanalytic clinicians need to know what coping skills are, what the various resources in your community are, & how to safety plan. Practicality and psychoanalytic work can & should coexist. Sometimes that’s what patients actually need.
