Multiple transatlantic incursions of highly pathogenic avian influenza clade 2.3.4.4b A(H5N5) virus into North America and spillover to mammals dlvr.it/T9h5XF
The recent outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1) viruses in dairy cattle in the U.S. poses an unprecedented pandemic threat. These viruses might be transmitted from cow to cow directly and the infection involves lactating animals with very high viral loads in milk
⚠️Huge—HUMAN RESPIRATORY INFECTION BY BIRD FLU—A third human case of H5 bird flu just diagnosed in a Michigan farm worker. The individual worked on a dairy farm & didn’t wear PPE. ➡️However—“With this case, respiratory symptoms occurred after direct exposure to an infected cow”—including cough and other respiratory symptoms! Thus is the first bird flu case in which an infected individual reported respiratory symptoms. The 2 human cases reported earlier this year experienced only conjunctivitis (pink eye). 💡Why is respiratory illness significant? It means the bird flu virus has somehow evolved to go respiratory. “The significance of respiratory symptoms relates to the possibility of onward spread. In people, influenza transmits via the respiratory route. A person with flu virus in their airways could be more likely to spread the virus — if the virus has the capacity to transmit between humans — than a person with an infection in their eye.” statnews.com/2024/05/30/bir…
Also, interesting to see the newly reported NA-T438A/I on this list
I don't think most people understand how bad this is. The mutation PB2-M631L detected before in cattle and birds, and now in a human infected with #H5N1, increases the virus capability to replicate inside human cells. Every single infection creates a new opportunity for the virus
H5N1 bird flu found at 7 more dairy farms, including 3 in South Dakota, 2 in Michigan and 2 in Colorado. This is the biggest one-day increase so far.
St. Jude ‘SJCEIRR researchers’.. 🤔😏
SJCEIRR researchers found that highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1) viruses isolated from dairy cattle in the US retained susceptibility to antiviral neuraminidase inhibitors (NAIs). Read more here: ow.ly/ZNk450RU2ca
CDC admits bird flu has 'pandemic potential' as study shows H5N1 virus has mutated 300 TIMES dailymail.co.uk/health/article…
A highly pathogenic avian influenza A (H5N1) infection was identified in a dairy farm worker in Texas. This pathogen has been reported in multiple dairy herds in several states. Read the report by Dr. Timothy M. Uyeki of @CDCgov and others: nej.md/3UrljM9 #IDTwitter
⚠️ BREAKING: The CDC tells doctors to look out for H5N1 infections in dairy workers, according to STAT.
DO YOU EAT EGGS? THEY NEED TO BE FULLY COOKED right now.* That means: NO runny eggs (scrambled or fried) NO raw eggs in your beer, and NO unpasteurized raw COW or GOAT MILK Why? The avian flu, H5N1, has recently mutated to the point that it is now spreading in CHICKENS, GOATS, AND COWS in the United States. Right now, humans can catch it from direct contact with these animals and consuming their uncooked byproducts. It is not yet transmissible human to human, but this virus is smart (good at mutating), so we can't be too careful right now. Why? Because the more times people get Avian Flu from animals or raw animal products, the more opportunities the H5N1 virus will have to mutate into a form which *is* transmissible human to human. That would be super bad, because... * H5N1 currently has a human mortality rate of about 50%.
5) Eggs of infected chicken also risky—make sure eggs are properly cooked. The USDA is culling 1.6 million chickens 🐓 in Texas. COOKED EGGS 🍳 only folks!!!
This is why H5N1 in livestock is such a notable development in the H5N1 saga: - H5N1 in wild birds: no/few mammalian adaptations + low human handling = low risk (but ecologically devastating) - H5N1 in poultry: no/few mammalian adaptations + high human handling = some risk (the only other human H5N1 case so far was a poultry worker in CO in 2022; vast majority of global human cases also worked directly with poultry) - H5N1 in wild mammals: mammalian adaptations + low human handling = some risk, but limited - H5N1 in livestock: mammalian adaptations + high human handling = really bad situation
