Stop using ATR only for the stop loss. Here is how I actually use it across an entire breakout strategy: Entry - Open of the bar + 2.5 × ATR(20) - Hard price level. It gets hit or it doesn’t. Filter - Short-term ATR vs long-term ATR - Short-term below long-term = market is coiling. Take the breakout. - Short-term above long-term = already expanding. Skip it. Exit - Stop distance = ATR(20) × a smaller fraction - The market decides how much room the trade needs right now. Same indicator. Three different jobs. Most traders only use the exit piece and ignore the other two. The filter alone removes a large number of false breakouts without adding any optimizable parameters. One measurement across entry, filter, and exit: how much the market is actually moving.
