My letter to @WSJ on the H-1B rule:
"There is a better way to achieve the president’s stated goal: Let markets work . . . The result would be certainty for employers, rewards to genuine scarcity and maximum upside for America’s economy."
It is unfortunate to see EPI continue to tout their obviously flawed analysis that claims H-1B workers are underpaid because it doesn't account for them being younger than the average worker.

What the current consensus about the STEM labor market gets wrong
There is a broad consensus forming that students and workers going into STEM fields have been getting a raw deal. There are a few groups driving this sentiment: AI doomers convinced mass unemployment is imminent,…
The challenge: 21 million workers earn less than $16/hr, two-thirds are women, and in states like WV & LA, 1 in 5 prime-age men don’t have jobs. Too many Americans face low pay or no pay.
So, let’s talk about what a WAGE SUBSIDY can do. [1/8] 🧵
This is how the rollout of the H-1B $100,000 fee has gone thus far:
- During the Friday White House Press Conference, the Secretary of Commerce, who has no authority over immigration, was invited to communicate the rollout of the new policy, where he said that it would be an…
As a neurosurgeon I care a lot about road safety.
By now you’ve probably seen @Waymo’s stunning safety results (like 91% fewer serious crashes). But they didn’t just publish data headlines. They released the raw CSV files and data dictionaries.
I did a much deeper analysis. A…
It's now clear that the Hyundai immigration raid was an operational mistake. A big reason why this mistake happened is because the agents who raided this plant (Homeland Security Investigations) have no experience in worksite enforcement. They previously worked on high priority…

.@jasonhehehe and I wrote about counter-productive tariff policy last week:
High-tech manufacturers are far more reliant on imported parts + machinery than low-tech peers. The goal of blunt tariffs is to reshore this production, but they wallop these firms' input costs. 1/
Reshoring high-tech manufacturing by taxing the very parts our factories rely on will not work.
Great new analysis from @cojobrien and @jasonhehehe: https://t.co/yhIpHPVPTM
New piece with @jasonhehehe for @InnovateEconomy:
Domestic high-tech manufacturers source twice as much machinery, equipment, and inputs from abroad as their low-tech peers.
If we actually want to reshore advanced manufacturing, sloppy, broad tariffs may be counterproductive.
The Hyundai raid in a nutshell went like this:
- Visa applicants: Hey State Department, can we get approved so we can work at the Hyundai plant?
- State: Sure
- Visa applicants: Hey CBP, we're seeking entry to work at the Hyundai plant.
- CBP: Ok
- Visa applicants:…
Indians in America are a very positively selected group that my upcoming research with @ManhattanInst finds Indians are the MOST positive national-origin group for the economy and federal budget.
Indians in the U.S. are good people, hard workers, law abiding, & highly educated.

H-1B should be corrected so that its goal is to bring in top talent and that talent is free to switch employers. Right now, the H-1B does give firms unfair leverage.
But the premise that our country is being destroyed by visa holders earning on average $120,000 and representing…

There is a great retrospective in the WSJ today on how the UK's post-Brexit experiment with big increases in legal immigration went wrong.
Their mistakes yield some important policy lessons for supporters *and* critics of skilled immigration. Let's dive in:

I'm out with a big new report this morning on the state of Ohio's high-tech workforce.
Silicon Heartland, as it's called, goes deep on the Midwest's storied engineering talent pipelines and offers some suggestions for drawing on this tradition to aid reindustrialization.
