I used to think cholesterol was simple. High is bad. Low is good. Take a pill. Problem solved. Then I read the Korean study. 14.9 million people. Nine years of follow up. No one on statins. And the result was a U-shape. Very low LDL. More cardiovascular death. Very high LDL. More cardiovascular death. The safest zone sat right in the middle. How can both extremes kill you if the number itself is the problem? Because the number was never the problem. Low LDL weakens your blood vessel walls. Cholesterol builds every cell membrane in your body. It makes your hormones. Drive it to the floor and the body cannot maintain itself. The vessels get fragile. They rupture. High LDL in someone with insulin resistance, chronic inflammation, and a damaged arterial wall is dangerous. Not because LDL attacked the wall. Because it got trapped inside a wall that was already broken. But here is what the system never tells you. A lean, active person eating real food can have LDL of 300 and be one of the healthiest people in the room. High HDL. Low triglycerides. No inflammation. Clean insulin. The LDL is high because their body is running on fat and transporting energy efficiently. Not disease. Metabolism. Same number. Completely different biology. Two people sitting in the same doctor's office. Same LDL on the lab report. One needs intervention. One does not. But both get handed the same prescription. Because the system was built to treat the number. Not understand the environment the number lives in. Stop chasing numbers. Start understanding your body.

The country's most humid place is in... California?! Tropical humidity has invaded San Diego and Los Angeles, but according to NOAA's RRFS model, the most humid place in the U.S. this week will be near the Salton Sea in Southern California — with dew points well into the 80s!

On a dark night in 1943, a wounded submarine captain, unable to climb down off his own bridge, gave a two word order that killed him and saved all 80 of his men. The order was "Take her down," and it became one of the most sacred phrases in the United States Navy. His name was Commander Howard Gilmore, and here is the moment. On the night of February 6, in the southwest Pacific, Gilmore had his submarine, the USS Growler, running on the surface in the darkness, stalking a Japanese convoy for an attack. Then a Japanese escort ship spotted them and swung around to ram, charging straight out of the black. Gilmore reacted instantly, ordering a hard turn to strike first, and the Growler smashed into the enemy ship at speed, a collision violent enough to crumple 18 feet of the submarine's bow over to one side. At that same instant, the Japanese crew raked the Growler's exposed bridge with machine gun fire. The officer of the deck and a lookout were killed outright, and Gilmore himself was cut down, badly wounded on his own bridge. Now understand the situation. A submarine's bridge is a tiny platform on top of the conning tower, and to dive, the crew scrambles down a hatch into the hull and seals it. The wounded men who could still move began dropping down the hatch. But Gilmore, hit and unable to climb down, understood the arithmetic instantly. The submarine was still on the surface, exposed, being fired on, and every second it stayed up it might be sunk with every man aboard. The only way to save the boat was to dive right now. But you cannot dive with the hatch open, and he could not reach the hatch. So he gave the order that would kill him and save everyone else. Clinging to the bridge, bleeding, he called down into the hull, "Take her down." He was ordering his own crew to seal the hatch and submerge the submarine while he was still on top of it, knowing it left him on the surface to die. His officers hesitated at the sheer horror of the command. Then they obeyed their captain. They closed the hatch and took the Growler down. Gilmore was never seen again. The battered submarine survived, submerged, and limped home, alive because her captain had traded his life for hers in the space of a few seconds. Howard Gilmore became the first submariner of the war to receive the Medal of Honor, and his final order, "Take her down," lives on in the United States Submarine Force as the ultimate expression of a commander who put his crew and his ship above his own life.

May is closing with one of the most captivating celestial events visible to the naked eye. On the night of May 30–31, the second full moon of the month will rise, creating what is known as a Blue Moon. This will be the first Blue Moon since August 2023, with the next not occurring until December 2028. But this year’s event is especially memorable because it coincides with a beautiful alignment of planets. As the Blue Moon shines, all four of the brightest planets visible from Earth, Venus, Jupiter, Mars, and Saturn, will also be on display. Before sunrise on May 31, Mars and Saturn will glow low in the eastern sky. After sunset, Venus and Jupiter will shine brightly in the western sky, with the full moon dominating the night. Despite the name, a Blue Moon is not actually blue in color. The term simply describes the second full moon within a single calendar month. Because the lunar cycle is approximately 29.5 days, two full moons rarely fit inside the same month. On average, a Blue Moon occurs only once every 2.5 years. The planetary “lineup” is an impressive sight created by perspective. While the planets are separated by hundreds of millions of miles in space, from our viewpoint on Earth they appear to line up across the sky alongside the brilliant Blue Moon. A perfect opportunity to look up this weekend and enjoy one of nature’s rarest sky shows.

Before it took off, the bird ate parts of its own liver, kidneys, and gut. That was the only way to be light enough to fly. Then it flew 8,425 miles from Alaska to Australia, in 11 days, without eating, drinking, or landing once. The bird is called B6. It's a bar-tailed godwit, four months old, weighing about as much as a can of beans. In October 2022, scientists at the US Geological Survey tracked its flight from Alaska all the way to Tasmania. The trip took 11 days and 1 hour. It is still the longest non-stop flight of any animal on Earth. For two weeks before takeoff, godwits eat until they almost double in weight. Fat ends up being 55% of their body, more than any bird ever measured. Then they shrink their own insides. About a quarter of their liver, kidneys, stomach, and intestines gets broken down and reused for fuel, making room for the extra fat and cutting weight. Their heart and wing muscles grow bigger at the same time. They never drink along the way. The water they need comes out of burning fat, the same reaction their muscles use for energy. They also never really sleep. B6 flapped its wings for 264 straight hours, cruising around 35 miles per hour with help from storm tailwinds. By the time it landed, it had lost almost half its body weight. The shrunken organs grew back over the following weeks. Scientists still cannot explain the navigation. B6 had never made this flight before. Adult godwits leave Alaska weeks earlier, so young birds fly alone with nobody to follow. How a four-month-old bird finds its way across 8,425 miles of open ocean to a place it has never seen is still an open question. About 100,000 bar-tailed godwits leave Alaska every fall. Most of them land in New Zealand or Australia 10 or 11 days later, having eaten parts of themselves to get there.

Chuck Norris held a 183-10-2 record and was a 6x world champion in full contact bare knuckle karate. On top of that, he beat heavyweight kickboxing world champion Joe Lewis 3 consecutive times and also had a brutal sparring match with undefeated kickboxing world champion, Bill Superfoot Wallace, that lasted an hour and a half. According to Wallace, they practically stalemated and "beat the crap out of each other". Chuck was trained in kickboxing/boxing by Benny The Jet Urquidez and was also trained in BJJ by the Gracies and Machados for 20 years. Even being able to submit Carlos Machado himself on occasion. Chuck had a 315 Ibs bench press at 180 lbs bodyweight and was said to have a grip back in the day that nobody could escape from because he was so strong. Even Jean Claude Van Damme said he'd never fight Chuck Norris, despite being a kickboxing world champion himself. Chuck held a 10th degree black belt in Chun Kuk Do, a 9th degree black belt in Tang Soo Do, an 8th degree black belt in Taekwondo, a 5th degree black belt in Karate, a 3rd degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and a black belt in Judo. Rest in peace, Chuck!
