Medicare spends 20% more on GI patients just because theyāre tied to a health system. Gastroenterology showed the widest cost gap: $5,368 more per patient in hospital settings than in independent practice. Oncology had the smallest gap, but still higher in health system modelsā¦
Health systems arenāt the āsafety net.ā Theyāre the most expensive site of care.ā Patients attributed to hospital-affiliated physicians consistently generate the highest Medicare expenditures, followed by corporate, PE-affiliated, and finally independent practices ļæ¼.
Independent physicians are not inefficient. They are systematically disadvantaged by payment policies tilted toward health systems.
