I've noticed the best presentations have a bit of structure, a bit of chaos. Your all-hands meeting is not a TED Talk where you have to nail every word, every pause, and every hand gesture. I never memorized my presentations, mainly because my memory isn’t very good, but I used to think the less chaos, the better. If I had a good one liner, I would get annoyed with myself if, the day of, I phrased it differently and I “wasted” that good line. Now, I don’t even try to say anything the exact same way. You’ll explain it a little differently each time and that’s normal and great. Don’t snuff out the chaos. This applies to job interviews: -> You don’t need a perfectly structured answer. -> Stay on topic and be concise because it’s easy to get carried away on tangents, but let yourself jive with your interviewer. -> Keep the bit of chaos of where that specific conversation, that specific day, wants to go. This applies to pitches and demos: -> If you’re explaining your slides, stay in the moment, read the room, and let yourself react to what you’re sensing. -> You have general talking points (structure)... -> So let your intuition pick up on the energy of that particular meeting on that particular day (chaos). As an audience member, it's more fun to hear from someone who isn’t entirely scripted because they are in the moment. People are happy to be there with you. It’s exciting to see a leader you respect think out loud, and see their ideas unfold organically in real time. So remember: a little bit of structure, a little bit of chaos.
