10. related note, if you need corrective lenses, wear glasses instead of contacts. if the cops use tear gas or mace, contacts will keep the caustic chemicals on your eyes for longer and that can cause permanent damage
9. remembered another one: if you have long hair, keep it pinned close to your head in a bun or braids. loose hair or a ponytail quickly become a handle and you really do not want cops to be jerking you around by your hair.
8. if it's possible, try to avoid being arrested. i know a lot of people treat it like a badge of honor, but it's a brutal and traumatizing experience. there are times where it's unavoidable and where it's worth it, but again, it's always better to avoid being arrested.
7. if an officer is hurting you, try to stay calm, and loudly but non-antagonistically say where and how the officer is hurting you. do not resist arrest, and do not struggle, because that can get you killed and it's better to live to fight another day
6. wear comfortable clothing and shoes you won't mind being stuck in for a few days. jail cells are already awful, so if you're stuck in one the last thing you'll need is to also be dealing with a painful underwire or shoes that don't fit properly.
5. stay hydrated, and don't skip meals. especially with temperatures rising, there's a good chance you will be sitting and cuffed in the heat without access to food or water. the police will neglect your medical condition out of spite. you dont need heat stroke on top of bruises.
4. make sure arrest support organizers are monitoring and OFF SITE. they should have everyone's full names and date of birth so that people who are arrested can be located once they're incarcerated. if they're on site, they might also be arrested and then you're shit outta luck.
3. memorize the jail support phone number. we used to advise people write it on their arms in sharpie, but that practice has since been weaponized as evidence of criminal intent. make it into a song if that helps, but make sure you know it by heart.
2. get and report as much officer info as you can. if arrest support knows the officers' names and badge numbers, car numbers, unit numbers, etc, and which jail you're being taken to, it will be easier to find you, to keep track of your condition, and to hold cops accountable.
1. this is the most important tip i can offer: do not antagonize the police. we all hate cops, and we should, and they absolutely should hate themselves and their jobs--but they can and will maim or kill you with impunity. treat them with caution like you would dangerous animals.

@reachrachelkahn Wear a shirt with long sleeves. If you're sent to a cold humid cell, it will keep you warm. If you stay there for a long time, the cold may keep you from sleeping and can really break your will, sometimes moreso than any direct police violence.
14. the only words you can safely say to the police are "i want to speak to my lawyer," and "i am exercising my right to remain silent." you can be affable about that, you can talk about the weather or whatever, but never forget anything you say can AND WILL be used against you
13. disable face ID and also fingerprint ID. there is legal precedent for police compelling people to give them both of these, but they can not legally compel you to give them your password. x.com/ohkirsten/stat…
12. if you're there to document and want to avoid getting other people arrested: while filming, avoid capturing protestors' faces, and blur them out before you post them to social media. do the same for tattoos and other identifying features.
All of this! Also, water only in your eyes. And if you get pepper sprayed,wash your hair in the sink first. Then shower in cool water. Hot water keeps things spicy.
11. to avoid being arrested and charged after the dust settles: wear nondescript clothing and a mask, cover your tattoos and hair, and NEVER EVER POST TO SOCIAL MEDIA ABOUT BEING THERE, EVER.
10. related note, if you need corrective lenses, wear glasses instead of contacts. if the cops use tear gas or mace, contacts will keep the caustic chemicals on your eyes for longer and that can cause permanent damage
9. remembered another one: if you have long hair, keep it pinned close to your head in a bun or braids. loose hair or a ponytail quickly become a handle and you really do not want cops to be jerking you around by your hair.

8. if it's possible, try to avoid being arrested. i know a lot of people treat it like a badge of honor, but it's a brutal and traumatizing experience. there are times where it's unavoidable and where it's worth it, but again, it's always better to avoid being arrested.
7. if an officer is hurting you, try to stay calm, and loudly but non-antagonistically say where and how the officer is hurting you. do not resist arrest, and do not struggle, because that can get you killed and it's better to live to fight another day
6. wear comfortable clothing and shoes you won't mind being stuck in for a few days. jail cells are already awful, so if you're stuck in one the last thing you'll need is to also be dealing with a painful underwire or shoes that don't fit properly.
5. stay hydrated, and don't skip meals. especially with temperatures rising, there's a good chance you will be sitting and cuffed in the heat without access to food or water. the police will neglect your medical condition out of spite. you dont need heat stroke on top of bruises.
4. make sure arrest support organizers are monitoring and OFF SITE. they should have everyone's full names and date of birth so that people who are arrested can be located once they're incarcerated. if they're on site, they might also be arrested and then you're shit outta luck.
3. memorize the jail support phone number. we used to advise people write it on their arms in sharpie, but that practice has since been weaponized as evidence of criminal intent. make it into a song if that helps, but make sure you know it by heart.
2. get and report as much officer info as you can. if arrest support knows the officers' names and badge numbers, car numbers, unit numbers, etc, and which jail you're being taken to, it will be easier to find you, to keep track of your condition, and to hold cops accountable.
1. this is the most important tip i can offer: do not antagonize the police. we all hate cops, and we should, and they absolutely should hate themselves and their jobs--but they can and will maim or kill you with impunity. treat them with caution like you would dangerous animals.
