Yesterday, my former high-school teacher asked me for some money. He promised to refund me, but because it wasn't a huge amount, I sent it to him and told him not to worry about paying me back. However, I became suspicious when he sent me a Safaricom Till Number and asked me to pay for goods he was purchasing. I made the KSh 5,500 payment. Later, he asked me for more money and gave me a different number to send it to. What made it suspicious was that he was still communicating with me from his usual phone number, so I refused to send the money. This morning, he called me and said his phone number had been hacked and that the messages asking for money were not from him. For the IT and cybersecurity guys: is it actually possible for someone's Safaricom number to be compromised in a way that allows another person to communicate with their contacts using the same number, without the owner immediately knowing? If so, how does this happen? Could it be a SIM-swap, WhatsApp/account takeover, or some other form of phone-number compromise?
I think its time to tell our story. We built a tech company in Nyamarambe, Kenya, in a place where nothing like it had existed before. We made personal sacrifices to keep it alive, convinced more than 30 people from different parts of Kenya to come here, and along the way found ourselves solving problems we never thought a tech company would have to solve We’ve watched the area around us slowly begin to change too. There’s a much bigger story here than I can fit in a single tweet. I’m looking for journalists, podcasters, documentary makers and other media people who would be interested in telling it.
