$IONQ just ran a real gas-pipeline planning problem on its Forte-1 machine. Israel’s national gas-grid operator (INGL) and Classiq used quantum optimization to find the pressure settings that move the most gas without breaking the network. On a small test network Classiq’s software found the best possible answer. They then ran a simpler version of the same problem on actual IonQ hardware using a very shallow circuit. The machine still returned valid operating points that sat right next to the classical best answer. Early, small-scale, but it’s a live energy-infrastructure problem executed on today’s IonQ computer, not just a simulation.

Phase II unlocks a $100M pool at 100 logical qubits, with $50M bonuses at 150 and 200. The government just set the finish line at double the world record and posted cash at every milestone past it. DOE's Under Secretary Darío Gil, formerly IBM's research chief, frames the first faulttolerant machine around 2028. Applications are due October 19, every company with a fault-tolerance roadmap now has to put its logical qubit claims in front of DOE's physicists, for money, with a deadline. Manufacturing, deployment, investment, supply chains. The Commerce Secretary becomes the President's principal advisor on scaling the industry. They'll map every critical component in the quantum supply chain, identify investment barriers, flag which parts come from foreign adversary countries, and write a national competitiveness strategy with industry, labs, states, and allies. Public report in two years, then every three. Quantum has been viewed as a science program for eight years. This creates a second lane, commercialization, with one agency in charge. It's the same structure the CHIPS Act used for semiconductors. Science agencies fund the labs, commerce industrializes what comes out. NASA has awarded Infleqtion a $20 million follow-on contract for the Quantum Gravity Gradiometer Pathfinder mission, bringing NASA’s total investment in Infleqtion's work for this program to $40 million.
