In the example above, pLM-BLAST was used to detect a Cache domain in a prokaryotic signaling protein. We believe that pLM-based homology detection combined with AlphaFold2 predictions can be a powerful tool for annotating yet uncharacterized proteins.
The benchmark against the Evolutionary Classification of Protein Domains database showed that pLM-BLAST detects homology with an accuracy comparable to HHpred while providing new interesting connections.
The pLM-BLAST has been published in Bioinformatics! (academic.oup.com/bioinformatics…). It is a tool for remote homology detection by comparing representations derived from protein language models (such as ProtT5). 🔗toolkit.tuebingen.mpg.de/tools/plmblast.
