Chinese tested positive for the same heart drug, TMZ, which led to Russian teen skating sensation Kamila Valieva getting a four year ban. WADA, the global anti doping regulator, went along with claim it was a freak mass contamination even though source of drug never identified
This story took months to come together, as did one being reported by Germany’s ARD network, and - somewhat mysteriously - just after we asked for comment, a leak of the news appeared. Funny that. You can read the full story here and on ARD.
Concerns about what was found to have happened have led to the FBI to look into this case after US passed a law criminalising doping in international sport. Investigative steps have taken place.
The details, unless properly and publicly cleared up, have raised massive concerns about China. This is David Howman, Wanda’s ex boss: “What it would say to me immediately is that perhaps there was some form of program in this sport to ‘prepare’ swimmers for the Tokyo Olympics.”
To believe Chinese story, you would have to believe that a prescription heart drug, sold in solid pill form, was somehow smeared into kitchen just at moment top swimmers ate, and somehow contaminated 23 of them. Until now, with full force of law, China hasn’t found source.
There have been some reports that a US relay team has been explicitly told that WADA will take action and re-award the gold medals from the Tokyo Olympics. None of our reporting suggests that is the case -- and can't be because WADA/swimming insist there is nothing more to do.
