"Charitable" reading can be a tool to refuse to hear what someone tries to say. If you truly worry that you didn't understand what somebody meant, because it sounded stupid and maybe they're not stupid, promote that to a first-class open question. Don't just make stuff up.

The view that advanced AI poses no extinction risk to humans but that climate change does pose an extinction risk to humans is interesting in that it rejects expert opinion in two pretty unrelated fields.

When I taught the Iliad I emphasized that it should be understood as a true example of post-apocalyptic literature: it was not *about* life as imagined after the post-apocalypse, but was written by people actually living after the collapse imagining what life was like before it.
The Mycenaeans had armies of chariot archers, equipped from state armories, but Homer imagined them as heroic warbands of infantry like those of his own time. Makes me imagine a post-apocalyptic world where WW2 is remembered, but people think it was fought by mohawked bikers.
