The minimum this morning of -5.0°C at Tomintoul (a Met Office climate site in Moray) will be, if confirmed, a new date record minimum temperature for 29th September on the TORRO lists. The current record is the -4.4°C recorded at West Linton (Peeblesshire) in 1940.

Some say global warming is not a problem as the world has been much hotter in the past. Don't forget that humans only evolved in the last 5 million years when it was at or colder than the current temperature. Graph thanks to NOAA (pre-Trump).

This well taken video is of a tornado that occurred near the village of Caragabal in New South Wales, Australia on Wednesday 10th September 2025. You can see in great detail how it interacts with and damages trees in its path. Not often we get this clear a view.

This very probable tornado occurred yesterday (Thurs 4th September) close to the A1 and just north of Cromwell in the east of Nottinghamshire. If you have any further details, especially any damage reports, please let me or TORRO know.

Today is the 50th anniversary of the Hampstead Storm of 1975 when just over 170mm of rain was recorded in NW London, most of it in two and a half hours. Lots more information on the attached Met Office fact sheet on this storm.

This tornado was filmed yesterday afternoon (Sat 19th July) at Eldon (nr Bishop Auckland, Co Durham) where it caused some damage. If you have any further information on this event or any other similar severe weather this weekend, please let TORRO or me know.

If you are wondering why the skies in Britain have appeared dusty + hazy in the last week, it is because smoke from Canadian wildfires has travelled across the Atlantic in the upper atmosphere. This has made the sky appear milky at times rather than the usual azure (blue).
