@doriecp @sociolinguista My linguistics teacher mentioned that some people use the phrase "might could." Years later I worked with a lady in Wisconsin who used the phrase and it took all my self control to stay cool and hide my excitement
my sociolinguistic interview skills came in handy today. had a "help I've fallen and I can't get up" situation with an elderly neighbor. so while I tried to make her comfortable and wait with her for her grandson to arrive to help I pulled out some of those questions 😅

@sbearbergman Depending on the meeting, I take notes as a female in tech and sent the summary, as it gives me the possibility to assign different tasks to various men so they have to work and not just talk... Can be also sort of powerful, and many men seem not to recognise this.
The point is that if you play any games you are a gamer, Idgaf if that one game you play is Candy Crush, Dark Souls, or League. Just let people enjoy things.

in exchange for an answer I will provide one for the equivalents in my field: mcwhorter is smart for real, he just has terrible politics (it happens) and pinker’s acquisition stuff is totally fine and his first book is 95% sensible, but everything else is cuckoo bananas

It's surprising that this simple observation has attracted so much attention. The premise of the criticism is that "the dictionary has changed the rules of English," which is wrong, following on "you can't end a sentence with a preposition," which is also wrong. 🧵
It is permissible in English for a preposition to be what you end a sentence with. The idea that it should be avoided came from writers who were trying to align the language with Latin, but there is no reason to suggest ending a sentence with a preposition is wrong.
So...Mammals normally store fat under the skin in an even layer, but camels evolved to pile fat in one spot, so the rest of their bodies can stay cool in the desert. Why don't other desert animals do this? Well, they do.... but for some reason, we never talk about them.....…
