Because these days even BSc and MSc at many universities are formally required to publish in high rank journals (IF > 1) and even some lab reports now take the form of useless patents (grant agencies love stupid stamps). Imagine how the supervisor can survive if for each useless pair of hands he needs to publish like mad.

Interesting convergence through... economy, not traditional physics. Economy showed more robustness, than refined phenomenology.
