The problem with an anti-government alliance in Ethiopia is that every party understands that this is temporary and cynical. An anti-government alliance will not survive the capture of Addis Ababa. Both the OLA and Fano know the TPLF would move to consolidate power. The OLA and Fano hate each other and have engaged in clashes with one another repeatedly over the past year. Meanwhile, both Eritrea and the TPLF know their alliance will not last. There’s a deep-seated resentment there. Eritrea would prefer a long war in Ethiopia with no winners. For the TPLF, should they topple the federal government and regain power they’d be right back to feuding with Asmara within years. This alliance sounds scary on paper but everyone, including the people trying to make it happen, knows it will not last.
