@vampbats to find something worth living for." Why do you think people are depressed? They've been rejected at every turn. There's no amount of effort that could make their lives better. If we want to reduce depression the onus can't be on the depressed. It has to be on the systemic causes

@vampbats It's this sentence: "deliberately making your life more unpleasant" I object to the most. There are not an insignificant number of depressed people whose lives are the way they are because they are the least unpleasant option available to them. This constant, "the onus is on you,

@vampbats I really have no idea what this is meant to mean. I don't have a nihilist philosophy so this is irrelevant to me.

@aisiantonas they're both written in relatively plain English and both about sex, they must be identical and doing the same thing.

@aisiantonas 100% Without the context of the novel, it's more difficult to see the subtext of Marianne and Connell's relationship and how they view each other and how Rooney is masterfully weaving this subtext into this particular passage. But, according to a certain kind of reader, as

I disagree with this post but it's hard to articulate why. If only there was a famous work of literature that argued that it's possible for a descendant to reject the sins of their blood.

The most important thing to remember when watching Netflix’s East of Eden is that Elia Kazan was a coward and a traitor whose soul is condemned for all eternity and whose name should haunt every subsequent generation of his condemnable seed.

@gstokey @acastersugar Not really. All the contestants were told was that there would be a recruitment by the time of the next murder. There is no reason for the contestants to presume that the other person up for murder was a Traitor.

@SolidStateGreg @thinkiamsad speculation and possibly further infringing on the victims privacy was the priority here. So a quick "I did it, stop looking for more information" is in my mind better. After that, I don't really care for a more introspective response because he should stop being a public figure.

@SolidStateGreg @thinkiamsad He probably shouldn't be more publicly introspective of a trauma that he caused someone else without that person's permission. I also think it would have to be a long and considered post in order to ensure that it wasn't shirking accountability and probably shutting down

@SolidStateGreg @thinkiamsad I'm genuinely asking: what could he have responded with that would've been better? Like every response was going to be shitty because he did a shitty thing and then made the shitty choice to become an influencer. This is the best of a bunch of not very good options.

@SolidStateGreg @thinkiamsad To be clear: I don't think he should have a public career. I don't think he should've had to tell an audience as I don't think he should've pursued a career with an audience and is wrong for having done so. But yes, in this specific scenario I couldn't imagine a better response.

@thinkiamsad Your victim doesn't deserve other people rifling through their trauma, something you potentially invite by being a public figure.

@thinkiamsad believe in rehabilitation then this must be the desired outcome. 3: I do think as part of rehabilitation you have to accept that you have deprived yourself of certain opportunities. I think you probably deprive yourself of a public life and shouldn't seek one out.

I said I’d do politics differently. So these are the facts: The UK has seen the lowest number of summer small boat arrivals since 2020. We’ve returned more than 80,000 people with no right to be here – and annual returns are at their highest level since 2016. There are half
