I don’t much care what basement-dwellers say anonymously online about Kirk’s killing. But I care deeply about first-hand accounts of local teenage children celebrating his death when they found out. That reflects a catastrophic failure of society.
@AnnaGorisch @elonmusk Bots drive up user statistics and make this place look more active/valuable than it otherwise would. (Very much at the expenses of content quality.) Not saying it’s deliberate, but a perverse incentive does exist.
Imagine being one of the people who designed an orbital pez dispenser and getting to see it operate in space for the first time. I weep for people who don’t understand how much bigger the Starship program is than just one dude.
One of my favorite workplace phenomena is when something I asked senior management to fix 2 years ago comes screaming back over the horizon, hypersonic, as a brand new idea that must be implemented right the f now.
@elonmusk@isabelleboemeke If you’re looking for an ultra-high energy density way to power humanity’s evolution into a spacefaring species*, nuclear would be the ultimate technology for X-ification. Juuuust saying. (*also available for massive data centers)
What’s the point of Love is Blind if everyone in the dating pool is hot? The experiment won’t provide a meaningful result if the domain of the independent variable is super narrow.
…or have I missed the point of a TV show again?
Footage showing the fly-over earlier of a U.S. Air Force B-2A “Spirit” Long-Range Strategic Stealth Bomber escorted by 4 F-35 Lightning IIs as President Donald J. Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin meet at Joint Base Elmendorf–Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska.
Amazing what they’re able to learn from in-flight telemetry. Yes, it would be ideal if the failures hadn’t happened in the first place. But considering what SpaceX is trying to achieve with this program it’s understandable that some of the limits are hard to predict. Huge respect for their willingness to take calculated, very public risks and see what happens.
Starship’s ninth flight test and subsequent vehicle test campaign carried reminders: success comes from what we learn, and even the harshest lessons offer opportunity. A technical summary of the investigations from Flight 9 and the Ship 36 static fire anomaly can be found here →
Not a huge proponent of self driving, but I wouldn’t mind a system that slaps the driver in the face if they try to merge onto a 70mph freeway at 41mph.
I dislike when a takeout meal portion is a little too small to save half for lunch but clearly too big for one sitting.
Doesn’t stop me from taking down the entire thing, mind you. I just don’t like consequences.
@AnnaGorisch I don’t understand the closed window shades on planes thing. Plus side, you can ask the lady lots and lots of questions about her job instead of watching the world glide by.
Morality is built from culture and motivates action from within us. While law is related to culture, it has to serve a nation’s culture to be legitimate. More importantly, law can’t dictate what you feel in your heart to be right or wrong. Law can only motivate behavior through consequence and that’s completely different from morality.
PSA: Emailing a text document as a 230MB image-based PDF is silly.
I realize many have never watched dialup choke on a low quality MP3. Some don’t know what a floppy disk is. Technology is better now.
But still, stop it.
@_baldtires@LeviBetz I’m basically on board with this take. If we’re seriously pivoting away from globalization so products are bound to get more expensive no matter what, pivoting toward products that you buy once and don’t have to replace for years and years feels like the future, not the past.
