“My life has been full of directions I never imagined. As an 18-year-old refugee from Lebanon, I had no idea I would become a scientist, and certainly not the recipient of a Nobel Prize.” – 2021 medicine laureate @ardemp Ardem Patapoutian. Read more: bit.ly/41RssIV
It’s partly because Dr. Judy Lengyel allowed me to intern in her lab at UCLA in the late 1980s, even though 10 other professors I called (by phone, since there was no email then 👴) rejected my offer for free labor. 🙏 Judy!

Prompt: why do principal investigators take undergraduates into their laboratories? heck of an answer here, if you know anything about the history of genetics (and especially the role of the fruit fly as a model organism) 👇🏽

@DalalSci my grandfather was a sophomore when Thomas Hunt Morgan took him into his lab (Fly Room @ Columbia) and as a sophomore he computed the worlds 1st genetic map! sturtevant.com/sturtevant/ahs…
… and got set on the right path for the rest of my career, including getting into grad school at Rockefeller and Harvard.
I got a long term job in a virology lab as an undergrad by cold emailing the faculty (not at my uni, I was at a small liberal arts college) with my enthusiasm about viral evolution. I got paid a little (in the scheme of things), almost got the project working…

If I'm not mistaken, 3 of the 5 co-first authors on this Cell paper from the @FitzpatrickLab were undergrads! A great reason to have undergrads in the lab, if you ask me! cell.com/cell/fulltext/…
Great discussion (see the responses) on the value of having undergraduate students in the lab. They bring energy and fresh ideas to the lab, allow postdocs and graduate students to hone their mentoring skills, they will be the next generation of researchers, plus so much more…

@DalalSci Appreciating that you're posting this as an undergrad, I'll say that even as a lowly postdoc (me), if an undergrad comes to me with a passion/interest for research I want to do everything possible to help them tap into that interest partly b/c so many did the same for me.
Wow, this blew up and I have scientists from all around the world in my mentions.. thank you all!! 😄😊

@DalalSci Because if they didn’t, there wouldn’t be future PIs or even scientists. It’s about investing in the future of science.
@DalalSci Or first patch, first interpretable gels, first time making a buffer. They’re all excited and pumped ups. It’s these energy that keeps me doing science actually. Not just computer grant proposal, or publishing new papers, or conference. It’s the joy of bringing new people in. 2/2
@DalalSci It’s a duty as a scientist to give opportunity to the newcomers. If they’re keen, even if they will spoil or break something - they will learn. It’s not about me most of the time, it’s about them. What a joy to see them glow up when they got excited. First simulations (1/2)
@DalalSci Undergrad students are often quite enthusiastic about research. I like this energy! They have ideas that are untainted by thinking pattern that we sometimes fall prey to when we worked in an area for a long time. Helps to see things in new ways. Also when trained properly,…
We have mentored 33 undergrads in our lab at GT. 11 have gone on to PhD programs. I consider this among the most impactful things I’ve ever done! Plus, undergrads are awesome. They’re great lab citizens. They also provide key mentoring training for grad students and postdocs.

Many reasons but mostly because someone did it for me. 😊

Writing improves your thinking because words on the page have infinite patience. To write is to freeze an idea so you can play around with it, step away from it, and see it with fresh eyes. Hard to do that with the ideas in your head.

@wunderlotus It is. But since the outbreak of the replication crisis, peer review is no longer the gold standard for high quality research anyway. All the bad studies, that failed to replicate, or had other serious issues, had been peer reviewed.
