The dollar strengthened noticeably last week, +0.7/+0.5 pct against baskets of developed/emerging market currencies. This allowed the S&P 500 to broadly outperform ROW in dollar terms.
Thanks to market expectations for continued low stock price volatility, investors can relatively cheaply hedge against a +10% drop in the S&P/NAS/Russell through year end.
As the old options desk saying goes, “it’s much cheaper to buy insurance when no one thinks they need it”.
US High Yield corporate bond spreads are near – but not through – their lows from earlier this year and continue to reflect strong confidence in the US economy and future corporate earnings.
Last week saw another new high for the S&P 500 and another week of mutual fund/ETF redemptions out of US equities. This part of the retail investor universe remains cautious, which is a contrarian bullish signal.
Since the start of 2024, when the VIX closes at/above 19.5 (its long run average) the S&P rallies by an average of 2.2 pct over the next month with a win rate of 82 pct. If we do get a selloff soon, that is the VIX level to watch for signs of a reasonable entry point.
Despite all the buzz about Federal budget deficits and the dollar losing its reserve currency status, long-term Treasury yields are lower year to date, both in absolute and relative terms versus other major economy sovereign debt.
DataTrek: "While valuations are unquestionably high, the simultaneous tailwinds of positive earnings revisions and expected Fed rate cuts have been enough to keep stock prices moving higher." @philrosenn@Inc@ReadOpeningBellinc.com/phil-rosen/sto…
