Reviewing a poor performing entity resolution implementation with a couple of data archs, using Cassandra it had a read before write for an in-line ER. One suggested adding a cache. The other responded by suggesting ScyllaDB for the cache, and I’ve been laughing since.

Mr Webber seems to have discovered entropy affects distributed systems. Trust me, entropy is an equal-opportunity destabilizer. It will create all sorts of ways of sowing disorder, even in the most orderly of systems.

Oh man, do I ever have thoughts and feels on this. (Get yer popcorn.) There are two major pathologies with tracing. First, it's daunting to roll out and make useful, and second, as you say, usage rarely spreads beyond that one or two experts per shop.

I’ve been saying this to paying customers for a couple years and now DataStax is just giving it away. Next thing you know everyone will have a nicely partitioned, massively scalable graph. And then what will have but loads of potential business value being realized.

Completely disagree! If you can’t get sucked into bike-shedding every now and then, then I don’t want to work with you. Seriously, how can you create a viable exit-strategy without some small-minded and short-sighted bike-shedding, with a side of petty politics?
