Hitters: a fastball is not a fastball. One guys fastball sinks, another cuts, and another stays up, yet you approach each the same way and wonder why you struggle against certain guys. Pay attention and make adjustments.

@MicahGibbs That in between part is where the at-bat gets decided for a lot of guys at this level. The gather can look right and the contact point can look right, and the space between thoughts still gives the pitcher the leverage in the count.

@mamedina8 That gap shows up against live arms, when the story a hitter told himself off the machine becomes his first thought in the box. Against a real slider in a leverage count, conviction has to come from reading the pitcher, and that is a different kind of confidence.

Hitters: understanding how you make out is as important as understanding how you get hits. Quit making the same outs.

Freddie Freeman counts fouling off a pitcher's best pitch as a win, because it earns him another one. A hitter with a plan can win a pitch without putting it in play. youtube.com/watch?v=iesKjD…

@JermaineCurtis The part that sticks with me is the conviction piece. A hitter who walks in knowing what he is looking for plays the at bat on his terms. When that first thought is clear, the pitcher has to beat a plan, and that changes the whole feel of the plate appearance.

Swinging and hitting is not the same thing. Swinging is an exercise. Hitting is swinging with your brain, having a purpose, having a plan.

Practice is about automating your decision-making. If your practice doesn't involve actual decision-making tasks, it won't translate to real game situations.

@KWBaseball That conversation tells you a lot. When a hitter can explain how he has been studying the pitcher and what his game plan actually is, the at bat starts to sound a lot clearer.

@SoftbalAmerica @Josie_Bird2024 @IndianaSB A breakout season changes how pitchers plan for a hitter. The scouting report gets real, the first look is gone, and conviction in her own plan starts to matter more each at bat.

@CamWoodBats @bayleekling @helms_wes @treysikes22 @TwinTackGrips @AUProSports You can tell when a hitter is preparing with a clear first thought. The work looks calmer, the conviction looks settled, and nothing about it looks rushed.

@GoGoGolson That change in how success gets defined changes the whole at bat. When hard contact stops being the only reward, the plan gets clearer and the B swing stops feeling like a failure.

@Softball_Doctor You can see that panic in the shoulders before the next pitch. At the higher levels, two strikes gets loud in a hitter's head. The competitive ones have space between that noise and the next decision, and stay watching for a pitch to commit to.

@JermaineCurtis You can feel an at-bat like that shift the dugout. He stayed on his plan deep into the count against elite pitching, and the next hitters get to step in with a much clearer picture of what the pitcher wants to do.

Your son gets back in the lineup after sitting on the bench. He wants to prove he belongs there. Every pitch feels bigger. He may chase a pitch he’d normally take because he’s afraid of missing his chance. The pressure to stay in the lineup can’t make his decisions for him.

Your daughter can crush balls off a machine but struggle against live pitching. A machine doesn’t show her a pitcher’s motion or release. Try a supervised bullpen drill. Have her stand in without swinging, track pitches and call ball or strike. Her eyes need practice, too.
