@Kat__Woods Do you think there's a meaningful sense in which we can realistically "solve alignment" ahead of time, before we begin engineering the systems that we are actually aligning? If so, why would you think this?
@MatthewJBar @Kat__Woods That's a far cry from fully 'solving alignment', but maybe gestures in the same direction. It also gives us more to work with than outright bans - "these conditions need to be met before the next step of scaling".

According to my rough model, solving alignment would reduce xrisk with roughly 4%, while pausing for a longer period would reduce it with the full 17%. I like that some EAs and rats support the pause but I mostly disagree with their models.
