Comparing Q1 to avg of Q2/Q3, retail sales up 1.9%. E-commerce sales increased 32% over same period to an avg of $210.6B Q2/Q3. Courier/messenger employment increased by 180k Apr-Nov. (Up 81k just in Nov.) Transport/warehousing jobs, down 95k in Apr, are up 184k through Nov.

Today’s jobs report shows the continued slow pace of recovery of industry employment following severe losses this spring (56% recovery overall). Leading job gainers are transportation/warehousing, retail trade, and construction – recovering over 70% of prior employment declines.

Saluting our veterans. In 2019, there were 18.8m veterans in the civ pop, nearly 40% from the two Gulf war eras (Aug ‘90 – Aug ‘01 & Sep ‘01 to present). Of the 5.6m Gulf war era veterans employed in 2019, 2.1m (or 37%) were working with a service-connected disability (BLS data).

1 day ago, Nov 8: National STEM Day. Science, Technology, Engineering and Math occupations projected to grow 8.0% from 2019-2029, compared to 3.7% for all occs. The median STEM worker earns 2.3 times that of their non-STEM counterpart, pulling in $86,980 in 2019 – BLS data.

A takeaway from today’s Employment Situation report – there is a continuing change in the composition of the unemployed away from job losers temporary layoff – expecting recall (29% in Oct, down from 78% in Apr) toward permanent job losers (33.3% in Oct, up from 9% in Apr).

Continued claims (CC) for traditional UI programs at 7.3 m as of last Sat. BUT CC for UI across ALL programs - latest data – including traditional workers and the self employed --stood at 21.5 m during week ending Oct 17th or 13.6% of pre-COVID Feb employment level.
