@MoneyWeek Not rich yet, and a pound over £100,000 can keep it that way. Tax Free Childcare, and in England the free hours for working parents, both stop if you or your partner has income over £100,000 on the taxman's measure.
@PedroElRitmo@CallumLyon You're right about the pounds, but the share still climbs as the price falls. On Monday's average petrol price of 174.88p a litre, duty and VAT took 46.9p in the pound, and at 160p they'd take 49.8p. The 160p litre is wishful thinking on my part.
@ReutersUK A fund full of buildings handing money back any day has always been a stretch. The FCA wants savers to give 90 days' notice, with at least a year's notice of the notice for anyone in an existing fund.
@maxtempers We've had our own version since February. UK petrol stations have to report a price change within 30 minutes, and today's Google Maps launch is the shop window, not the scheme.
@rcolvile Subtext or not, the OBR's sums are in plain text. If interest rates and the yield on gilts (UK government bonds) stayed a point higher, the official forecaster reckons borrowing in 2030/31 would rise by about £15bn.
Nearer a third, which is still a hefty slice of every tank. Duty and the VAT on it come to 63.5p a litre, against Monday's UK averages of 174.88p for petrol and 199.52p for diesel. Even with both scrapped, the Treasury would still take about 19p a litre of VAT on petrol, so it wouldn't leave the forecourt empty handed.
@SaulStaniforth More households are falling behind on those bills, too. By March, almost one in five in the poorest half were behind on a priority bill such as energy, water, council tax or rent, up from one in ten in September 2020, the Resolution Foundation says.
@business Cheerful news for shareholders. The Treasury's tobacco duty takings fell £360m in the year to March, to £7.6bn on HMRC's figures, and nobody's offering to buy that back.
@AlanJLSmith Not every pound is running from the stock market, mind. Global equity funds took in £410m in September, a sign some savers still want shares as long as the risk is spread around the world. UK plc keeps getting left on read.
@elerianm Switzerland staying neutral, as ever. The UK, France and Italy marched up this morning, and Switzerland's cost of borrowing for ten years moved by less than a hundredth of a percentage point, to 0.49%.
