This might be the best Paris 2024 story: Zeng Zhiying made her Olympics debut at 58-years old. Born in China, she is now representing Chile in table tennis because of an incredible journey. At age 18, she expected to go to the Olympics for her birth country, China, as one of the best players in the world. But then table tennis changed out the two-sided paddles, and her game was thrown off. She never made the team and became incredibly frustrated with the sport. She retired from the game as a player at age 20. Shortly after, she moved to Chile and coached various table tennis teams. Then, in 2000, she decided to get a “real job” and step away from the game. For 20 years, she didn’t play. Then, in COVID, she bought a table and started playing again. She made it a goal to make the 2024 Olympics representing Chile. And, at age 58, she did it! The human brain is crazy powerful, and it can prevent us from continuing something we love or help us persevere through times when the odds are heavily stacked against us. What an inspiration to follow your dreams.

“A good book gets better at the second reading. A great book at the third. Any book not worth rereading isn’t worth reading.”, says Nassim Nicholas Taleb. He is the author of the Incerto, a five-volume philosophical essay on uncertainty. 25 books recommended by @nntaleb 🧵

When you're lacking motivation, remind yourself: discipline now, freedom later. The labor will pass, and the rewards will last.

Your faith in yourself should overcome your insecurities. Imagine yourself a king and you will become a king.

Life goes by very fast. And the worst thing in life that you can have is a job that you hate, that you have no energy in, that you’re not creative with and you’re not thinking of the future. To me, might as well be dead.

True genius, in strategy or anywhere, lies in self-control, self-mastery, presence of mind, and fluidity of thought.

A life well lived. “I paid no attention to the territorial boundaries of academic disciplines and I just grabbed all the big ideas that I could.” “If you skillfully follow the multidisciplinary path, you will never wish to come back. It would be like cutting off your hands.” “Take a simple idea, and take it seriously.” “It is remarkable how much long-term advantage people like us have gotten by trying to be consistently not stupid, instead of trying to be very intelligent.” “Spend each day trying to be a little wiser than you were when you woke up. Discharge your duties faithfully and well. Systematically you get ahead, but not necessarily in fast spurts. Nevertheless, you build discipline by preparing for fast spurts. Slug it out one inch at a time, day by day. At the end of the day – if you live long enough – most people get what they deserve.” “I try to get rid of people who always confidently answer questions about which they don’t have any real knowledge.” – Charlie Munger

19 Keys To Being a More Disciplined Person:

Remember that this moment is not your life, it’s just a moment in your life. Focus on what is in front of you, right now. Ignore what it 'represents' or it 'means' or 'why it happened to you.'

Don’t suffer imagined troubles. “Don’t let your imagination be crushed by life as a whole,” Marcus reminded himself. “Stick with the situation at hand.” Focus on the moment. Waste no time thinking about the monsters that may or may not be up ahead.

Kobe’s definition of Mental Toughness is so simple, but so much power to what he is saying & describing - a must watch

Your potential, the absolute best you’re capable of—that’s the metric to measure yourself against. Your standards are. Winning is not enough. People can get lucky and win. People can be assholes and win. Anyone can win. But not everyone is the best possible version of themselves.

This is a great thread. Simple but effective steps grounded in laboratory and “real life” data. @FitFounder (Dan Go) has impressed me with very good content again and again. Thanks for this one Dan!

"If you want to be successful, you need to be bad, then you need to be good. Then when you're good, you need to fail. Then when you fail, you're going to figure it out... There is no shortcuts. It's a journey." Nikola Jokic on the journey to an NBA title

7 short rules for a better life 1. Say no (a lot) 2. Focus on effort, not results 3. Wake up early 4. Go the f to sleep 5. Relax. Whatever it is, you’re probably taking it 6. Give up on the idea of revenge 7. Do your job well (how you do anything is how you do everything)

Every day you face battles—that is the reality for all creatures in their struggle to survive. But the greatest battle of all is with yourself—your weaknesses, your emotions, your lack of resolution in seeing things through to the end.

You must avoid at all costs the idea that you can manage learning several skills at a time. You need to develop your powers of concentration and understand that trying to multitask will be the death of the process.
