As stem cells differentiate into neurons to acquire their excitable character and their ability to convert chemical signals into electrical signals (and vice versa), they begin displaying spontaneous activity patterns and become "oxidative". Dependent on mitochondria. Why is neuronal information processing tied to mitochondrial metabolism? Because the mitochondrial network is an information processing system? x.com/InterestingSTE…

A “no” worth $1M for baby helmets, because we're worried that babies who don't need it, will get it. And yet 20% of [the SB2 ESA] is reserved for people that we already know don't need it. In light of all the “nos,” it's hard to stomach. @DiegoBernalTX texasimpact.substack.com/p/the-deservin…

Penrose's Quantum consciousness theory explained ✍️ Roger Penrose's quantum consciousness theory, known as the Orch-OR (Orchestrated Objective Reduction) theory, proposes a radical explanation for the nature of consciousness. Developed by physicist Sir Roger Penrose and anesthesiologist Stuart Hameroff, this theory states that classical physics alone cannot fully account for the phenomena of consciousness. Instead, Penrose and Hameroff argue that quantum mechanics is integral to understanding how consciousness arises. Central to the Orch-OR theory is the role of microtubules, which are tiny structural components found within the neurons of the brain. Penrose and Hameroff suggest that these microtubules act as sites for quantum processes. Unlike the conventional view that brain activity and consciousness are purely the result of biochemical interactions and neural networks, the Orch-OR theory proposes that microtubules can exist in superposition states, where they simultaneously represent multiple possibilities. This capacity for superposition, according to the theory, enables quantum computations to occur within the brain, contributing to the emergence of conscious experience. The theory further introduces the concept of Objective Reduction (OR), a process proposed by Penrose as a mechanism by which quantum superpositions collapse into a single state. In the context of the brain, this collapse is not random but orchestrated by the microtubules, leading to a coherent and unified conscious experience. This orchestrated objective reduction is hypothesized to be a fundamental component of consciousness, bridging the gap between the quantum and classical worlds. Although the Orch-OR theory is highly speculative and remains controversial within the scientific community, it offers an intriguing perspective on the hard problem of consciousness, which questions how subjective experiences arise from physical processes. Critics argue that the theory lacks empirical evidence and that the brain is too warm and wet for delicate quantum states to survive long enough to influence cognition.
