@Johannels16 @ProfTimNoakes Two big sources of D-lactate build-up in the body are the absence of Bifidobacteria in the gut and polyethylene glycol (PEG) in processed foods (and some laxatives). Once the D- to L-lactate is distrubed, the downward spiral begins.
@Johannels16 @ProfTimNoakes D- vs L-lactate ratio is the elephant in the metabolic room. Elevated D-lactate levels (relative to L-lactate levels) will gum up the mitochondria, leading to slower energy production, with the well known host of consequences that brings about.
@ProfTimNoakes @sweatscience I've helped several Comrades athletes improve their PBs by an hour or more by running on water and some salt only. Some were high carb, some high fat. I used pre-race animal protein load (24-48 hours) to achieve this. Anecdotal evidence that exogenous glucose is not needed.
@ProfTimNoakes @sweatscience From research I did about 30 years ago (but not published), I found that exogenous glucose stops gastric emptying stone cold, trickling through the glucose slowly to the duodenum. Thus bolus glucose during a race is not (imho) helpful in replenishing glycogen.
