Here’s an example shot in similar conditions. Notice that while the bolts are sharp in both images, the horizon and city lights in this one benefit greatly from not giving vibration an opportunity to degrade the image.
Close range lightning photography tip: When shooting bolts inside 1 mile, shoot in bulb mode and close the shutter immediately after the strike. Why? Even if your focus is perfect, the shockwave from the thunder will introduce vibrations and make your foreground look blurry.

@SirlinJohn We were about to blast east after staying too long and then i saw an rfd surge and it was spinning /so fast/ got close and there was a super low contrast funnel above us, backed up and it planted almost immediately. Followed it til its death and missed like 5 tors out east lol
@CameronJNixon @SirlinJohn I echo John’s thoughts. Since watching your video I’ve gone and pulled radar data from various tornadoes I remember and I’ll be derned if it doesn’t show up time and again. I’ve shared it with my office. Good stuff.

Excellent example of "nudger theory" at work here. Supercells that were all by themselves rarely produced significant tornadoes in our study.
