The student debt crisis is the direct result of government subsidizing loans. This allowed universities to jack up tuition well beyond the rate of inflation, and students and their parents were largely indifferent to indebting themselves because they believed it was necessary to get ahead in life. If government starts subsidizing housing costs, you will get similar distortions that ultimately make people worse off. We don't even need to speculate. When the federal government in the Bush years basically forced banks to issue loans to people with poor credit (largely minorities) we got a massive housing crisis a few years later when they defaulted en masse. But government these days is about never learning any lessons from the past.
