is college just a place to teach students how to get jobs? should not be!
offer four or five year program where one year or semester is an externship? internship required to graduate?
need students to be able to communicate, work in teams, articulate and, in general, have a renaissance education
a system of proper online learning an enhance the student base and the education at vtc as a whole.
one can keep tradition while being an innovative industry leader. one is not mutually exclusive from the other. combination.
four yr degree students start at higher level, more marketable as employees, elevated more quickly in industry, not as much training needed
four year degrees also enhance the overall reputation of the institution. associates may have their place, but focus should be 4 yr.
employers are looking for people with more education. 2 yr education is no longer adequate.
emphasize the move towards more BA/BS and less associates degrees
foster idea of life-long learning, offer continuing education courses.
from hiring standpoint: have to produce students who can offer employers what students at other colleges do not have
we are a small school - market this! take advantage of this to create well-rounded students with a broader education base
development opportunity: offer core technical classes while also preparing students to be well-rounded members of society. general ed.
strength: (from hiring standpoint) rigorous programs, more so than competing colleges
a major threat is other colleges that are in our "league" and relatively in the area (within a five hour radius)
take advantage of integration between industries and groups throughout the state
significant change is a good thing. that which is taking place around the college is dramatic and the school needs to follow suit.
theme of the day: need to be forward thinking and be ready and willing to change. it's going to happen, embrace it.
