I'm joined on this @HiddenForcesPod by renowned economist Charles Goodhart, who argues that aging demographics will lead to a long-term rise in interest rates and inflation, straining government finances and jeopardizing the independence of central banks. bit.ly/HF_272

All you had to do to be correct on the two biggest macro events in 2022 (Russia's invasion of Ukraine & the reversal of the Fed put) was to (1) listen to what policymakers and politicians were saying (2) and believe them. Why was this so difficult? I have some thoughts. 🧵👇

I find it odd that industry practice the last 30 years has been to hang on every word a fed chairman says even when it’s mumbled and garbled and makes no sense. Meanwhile, JayPow basically tells us in March that Volcker is his hero and no one listens. ft.com/content/7eb5e2…

I've received some pushback from listeners who were uncomfortable with the lack of judgment or even the fact that I was willing to discuss someone as controversial as Alex Jones on my show. Here is my response to one listener this morning that reflects my feelings & motivations.

Alex Jones, the founder of Infowars, is the subject of this week's @HiddenForcesPod, with filmmaker Alex Lee Moyer, whose new documentary shines a light on one of the most controversial and divisive figures in America. cc: @AlexsWarMovie bit.ly/HF_267

The problem with targeting interest specifically is there are people who gain and people who lose from every movement. So once you've targeted the interest rates, the decisions become extremely political. - Edward Chancellor bit.ly/HF_266

My definition of interest is the price of time. If I were to lend you $100 and ask for it immediately back, it would be unseemly of me to charge interest on it because you couldn't have done anything with it. - Edward Chancellor bit.ly/HF_266

Instead of sending students to study abroad for a semester, we need to start sending them to states and cities in parts of our own country where they've never set foot in before. The cultural divide here is arguably larger than in Europe and in greater need of being bridged.
